My son has a F150 1997 Ford with a 4.2 engine. He just purchased it 4 months ago and the engine just went. We have replaced the engine and all was going great until we had to set the camshaft position sensor. The manual says we need a Cam senor sctconizing alignment tool. We have called a number of place and cannot get one. The truck has been off of the road for 2 weeks now and we would like to get it back on the road. Ford parts people will not order the part we need, jobbers do not appear to have it. If we can get Ford service people to order it, it will take 2 weeks to get here (Surrey, BC).
Can anyone tell me what the tool does and can we make one or align the senor without the tool.
The CMP synchronizer tool lines up the CMP to get the injection timing where it is supposed to be. If you just bolt in the CMP the engine will run but the injectors will be firing when they arent supposed to. It shouldnt do any damage but it might not run properly. It should run well enough for you to get it to a local dealer to get it set properly. Or you might see if a dealer will lend you the tool.
The manual says that when installed correctly the CMP sensor connector will aim 54 degrees CCW of straight ahead. I'm not sure how you would measure that but maybe you can figure out a way to get it close at least and see what it runs like.
