Sorry OP.

Best towing setup in my opinion would be good custom tuning. Single shot injectors, and either a van turbo or 38R, with the motor hooked to a BTS(Brian's Truck Shop) or John Woods Tranny. Done, highly reliable, proven setup.

As for the wastegate, just adjust it properly, and don't worry about it. Until you are high boost pressures, I wouldn't worry. If you went really high boost then you might add a wastegate simply to relieve back pressure.

Renyen, do you know how long ago Ford stopped recommending Dex III/Merc and started recommending Mercon V? It's been years...at least 5 years ago.

Ford and GM no longer license Dexron III/MERCON. Nobody is watching what's in them. MERCON V is licensed by Ford so there is some monitoring the fluid.

But it's your choice. Use a fluid no longer recommended by Ford (Dex III/Merc), or use the one recommended by Ford (Merc V).

From what I understand, Mercon is not made anymore, only Mercon-V.

It disappeared for awhile, Rick, but it's back on the shelf now. At least it is in Autozone and Kragens.

But that info I posted above, Ford licenses Merc V now, not the Dex III/Merc, is from Mark Kovalsky.

My 2006 Lubrications Guide still shows Mercon as the recommended fluid, so I think it was after 2007........

ISSUE:
MERCON® Automatic Transmission Fluid is being replaced by MERCON® V as a service fluid.

ACTION:
Beginning immediately all automatic transmission / transaxle applications requiring MERCON® can now be serviced using MERCON® V or MERCON® Automatic Transmission Fluid or dual usage fluids labeled MERCON® / MERCON® V. After July 1, 2007, MERCON® Automatic Transmission Fluid will no longer be manufactured, therefore, availability of this fluid will only continue for however long it takes to deplete what remains in inventory.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

For proper fluid application on current and past model vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions / transaxles refer to the fluid usage chart. (Figure 1)

CAUTION: AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS / TRANSAXLES THAT REQUIRE MERCON® V SHOULD STILL ONLY USE MERCON® V OR DUAL USAGE FLUID LABELED MERCON® / MERCON® V.

CAUTION: MERCON® SP, MOTORCRAFT PREMIUM AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID AND MOTORCRAFT M5 ATFS ARE UNIQUE FLUIDS AND MUST BE USED IN APPLICATIONS RECOMMENDING THAT PARTICULAR FLUID. USE OF ANY OTHER FLUID MAY CAUSE REDUCED FUNCTIONALITY OR TRANSMISSION DAMAGE.

CAUTION: THE FUNCTIONAL CHARACTERISTICS OF FLUIDS FOR CVT TRANSMISSIONS ARE VERY DIFFERENT THAN THOSE OF OTHER AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUIDS (ATFS). USE OF A FLUID OTHER THAN MOTORCRAFT CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE CHAIN TYPE TRANSMISSION FLUID OR ONE LABELED AS MEETING MERCON® C WILL CAUSE FUNCTIONALITY CONCERNS AND INTERNAL TRANSMISSION DAMAGE.

How about synthetic? Last time I changed mine I used synthetic, but after seeing what it cost now... Yikes. I think I will skip the synthetic and get an external filter for this change anyway. What are most people running?

I run Schaeffer's 204SAT synthetic transmission fluid. The same fluid BTS uses in all their trannys. Good for approx 60K (twice that of dino fluid) depending on the work environment. Runs about $120 for 5 gallons. I use 18 quarts in the tranny and whatever is leftover goes in the power steering.
