Trans-X

Anyone use this stuff in their rigs? I think i'm getting a shift stall some times and think the tranny valve body is getting plugged or something in it is sticking. It been happening on 3rd gear and also when going into reverse. It seems to pop in instead of a smooth shift.
I will do a tranny filter change and a flush this weekend and was wondering about adding a quart of this stuff if it would help, just not sure how it would act with these new fan-dangled transmissions.

Also what do i need to be careful of if i take the valve body off and clean it with brake-cleaner, or compressed air? Is there some small ball bearings that i need to worry about falling out or something??

Thanks for the help!!

I wouldn't use any transmission additives. I assume you're talking about the TorqShift in your '06, when was it last serviced and what fluid was used? Have you had it scanned for any transmission codes?

Yes sorry, i left out the truck info. I had full intention of putting it in there but totally forgot.

Its an 2006 F-350, 5.4L 150,000 new to me. So i really have no idea of service record.
Haven't pulled codes, not sure how. No CEL on at all.

Thanks.

Has it ever gone into limp mode (stuck in 3rd gear) with the tow/haul light flashing? First thing I would do is get it serviced with a full flush and the correct Mercon SP or LV fluid. Dealership might be your best bet, but spendy ($200-300). You could have one of the shift solenoids going bad, but if it set one of those codes I think the tow/haul light would flash.

Nothing that extreme has happened yet. The Tow/Haul works properly when in use, and has never gotten stuck in one gear.
The tow/haul has never flashed when not in use either.

Can i just buy the proper fluid and do the flush myself? That is what i was planning on doing this weekend.

Also maybe take the valve body off an clean it with solvent, as long as their isnt anything that could fall out or lost LOL!!!

You can do it at home, but you only get about half of the fluid out with a drain/refill. That is what I do every 20k, but the reason I recommended the full heated flush is because you don't know what's in there or how old it is. If you do it at home, I would drain and refill, run it for a few hundred miles, then do it again to get a higher % of the old stuff out. I don't think there's really a valve body to remove and clean, just the solenoids and I wouldn't mess with them unless you replace a bad one. If you know someone with AutoEnginuity or other diagnostics tool that can read Ford specific codes I would check for transmission codes (standard OBDII reader won't do it).

great thanks!
I was going to do that flush sequence were you disconnect the return line and pour in fluid while its running and pumping it out the line into a bucket.
Then run it through the gears so i get all the fluid out of the valves.
Sounds like i need 20 qts or so.

Ill do this first then ill check for codes if this doesn't work.

There is a thermostat that goes to the cooler, so even if you start hot the thermostat will close when you start adding cold fluid.

I just read a thread were Mark K said that its best to change out the trans filter out for the newer style 2008 filter.
Is this still relevant? Do i also need the newer style pan or will it fit under the old style one. Again mine is a 06.
Also does someone else sell SP or Mercon LV trans oil yet or do i still need to get it at Ford dealers?

The '08+ filter is a full flow filter as opposed to just a screen, so it is much better, and does require the newer pan. Ford has superseded Mercon SP with LV for all applications, so you can use either and they are compatible with one another. Essentially they are the same fluid except LV is slightly higher viscosity than SP, about halfway between SP and V.

Have you guys seen this? Can this be added to the older TorqShifts to get better filter characteristics?

I believe yours should have the external filter. No need to drop the pan. Drain the fluid, (it has a drain plug) change the external filter, and refill 8 quarts of Mercon LV. You can get Mercon LV at Oreillys but they might have to order it because most stores don't stock it.
