I had the transmission on my 2000 5.4 supercab 4x4 flushed at the dealer a bit ago. Ever since the damn thing doesn't seem to shift right. When it kicks up a gear (passing gear) it will not shift back down. The RPM's stay up and you have to physically take your foot completely off the gas pedal to get it to shift. Is this a symptom of something bad to come? The truck only has 113k on it, and really hasn't been used to tow much at all. This problem compiled with the need for ball joints, and the god awful looking door seam rust is really making me want to get rid of the old girl. But I dread taking on payments again. Any insight to what could be going on in the tranny?
I don't know about the transmission issue but I know the feeling about not wanting to put money in the old truck and not wanting the payments. I would guess you have a valve sticking i the transmission. They probably knocked some dirt loose when changing the fluid. I'm due for my transmission fluid to be changed and part me says don't do it you'll only have trouble later.
you don't need to drain any fluid. It's only a 4 oz. bottle. I had a hung up governor once. The truck was always starting in 2nd gear. After adding the additive it shifted like brand new. I'm certainly not saying this will definitely fix your problem but I am saying it's much cheaper than a rebuild....worth a try, no?
Search a bit more, there is lots of info on this topic...sorry to say that you will find that dealer and quick lube "power flushing" has been known to cause a few problems. Hopefuly you are not a number added to this statistic.
ward: Yes I know there are many posts regarding this topic. However, there are little to none that have the symptom I'm having. I've never had a tranny that will not shift back down. Slip yes, not engage certain gears yes...but just plain not kick out of passing gear..that's a new one that I've found.
It's funny, because we supposedly have the #1 rated Ford mechanic in the country at our dealership, and he is the one who suggested to just do a flush rather than pull the pan and do it as I wanted to originally. Just goes to prove that sometimes the old ways are still the tried and true ones.
Here is what i was told on my 97 F-250 LD 4x4. It had similar symptoms, hanging in one gear, shifting when it wanted just being an idiot. Eventually I got the o/d light flashing and shifting hard into every gear...my fix..pull over and turn off the truck, start it up and it ran fine then. Here i am 1 1/2 years later and i just dropped 2k on a rebuilt tranny, I also added a cooler to it and a "bulletproof" torque converter as they put it. Possibly I may have got taken a little but hey thats my baby and i hope thats the last one i have to buy.
I know this is a whole different vechicle. But I had the exact same problem on my 1987 Chevy Celebrity. Great little car, but it would not downshift. I had to manually pull it down into gear. Flushing the tranny did nothing. But I added some additive and it made it significantly better. Still not perfect, but better.
