valvetrain tick
valvetrain tick
I have a 2010 F150 with the 4.62v. I bought it new in March '11 and have used either MC 5w20 or Pennzoil 5w20 and MC filters, changing every 5k since new. When cold (30deg F or below) the right side has a loud ticking, until it has run for approx 1 minute. Since it is a 2v, cam phasers should not be a part of the problem. Any ideas on what the issue could be. It has just over 36k now, so the powertrain warranty should still be valid. Any input is appreciated.
specifically, the 4.6 2v is a realitivly simple motor by comparison. I'd bet on lifters (hydraulic cam follower lash adjusters?), they have been a known source of noise in these engines since day one.
with regard to the warranty i offer the following anecdote, relevent to your situation:
my mom had a 92 Aerostar that developed a tick when cold, similar to yours, and took it into the dealer several times and they could not get it to repeat while in their care.
so she brought it back one final time with 35,997 miles on the clock and said "find it, i dont care how long it takes, i do not want it back until you find it" So about 3 days later she gets a call to let her know they found it and she would be getting a new short block installed that week. While in the dealership's care, they exceeded the 36k warranty, but she brought it in under the wire and they honored the warranty.
I'd take yours in with the same approach, especially if you are up against the clock on an expiring warranty.

Thanks meborder, lots of views, only one reply...wow. It just seems unusual, as it never did it until recently. I drive a lot of miles (about 40k a yr) but 85% are highway and OCI is 5k with good stuff by all accounts (MC5w20 and MC Fl820S filters) . I know this is basically the same engine in all crown vics, and the previous generation mustang and I have not heard any of them making the same noise. Just curious if anyone else with a 2valve engine was seeing this issue. I know the 3valves have noise issues with the cam phasers. I think (I hope) the powertrain warranty is longer than the standard 3/36 bumper to bumper, I will check into that today. Not a bad amateur mechanic myself, but not gonna touch it if I can get it for free. Just like to be informed about ongoing issues , TSB's and such . I know dealer BS when I hear it, so I may just take it in and see what happens. IF anyone else has any input, would love to hear it, thanks !
just something else that come to mind ....
it seems unlikely to have varnish on sucha new engine, but sometimes lifters will get sticky with buildup. I've known people who had good luck with Seafoam. run a can of that through your oil on the last half of your oil change.
thins the oil a bit, but not too much apparently. a co-worker drove it on the interstate at 75 for 6 straight hours with seafoam in the oil. the only thing it did was fix his problem with the sticky lifter.
i'm bettin on a bad lifter .... my 95 t-bird, 4.6 2v clatters for 2 or 3 seconds at start up, which is pretty normal for the earlier mod-motors.... but nothing like what you describe.
if you want more responses, make reference to ethanol gas or something ... that usually wakes things up j/k

Funny stuff
nah, I'll just ask "what's your favorite oil"...then watch the carnage from afar.. it only does it when cold and I should have added this...when sitting for a long period. If it cools off quickly on a cold day...no big deal, but let it sit overnight, tick-tick-tick. Almost like the oil has completely drained away(normal) but is really slow in getting up to the right side valvetrain. Looks like a dealer visit in my near future. Thanks for your input !

Thanks for that LxMan1, I should probably check that too ! I actually considered it earlier, but dismissed it for some unknown reason :/ however, I was not aware that it was common in any way. That's what we are here for, to learn from each other, thanks to all.
Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but with cooler temps on the way (been 46 last couple of mornings) the cold weather noise is back. I did check for an exhaust leak and found no evidence of one, yet still double checked the tightness of the studs, all was well. Different filters, (MC , Bosch, M1 etc) with no difference. Oils have no effect either (MC,PP, PU,M1) in everything from 5w30, 5w20, 0w20,0w30, all have no effect on the noise. It is a very noticeable tapping or ticking, right side, apparently from the valvetrain area. Meborder made mention of some known issues here, but was wondering if anyone has any specific information along with solutions or procedures . I don't want to throw parts at it one cylinder at a time, and the dealer is useless, so it is up to me. Thanks for your input.
