Flywheel\Starter Issues

For the last year and a half or so every once in a while I will go to start the truck and get a loud grinding noise without the truck starting.

Now when this happens usually the second time I try to start the truck it starts up normally with no signs that anything is wrong, but as of late a few times it grinds twice before starting and twice it took 3-4 grinds before starting.

Now in the past I have replaced the starter when this same problem came up and it solved it for a time but now I am thinking its something to do with the flywheel.

Any input would be a great help.

Tomorrow I'm going to take off the starter and figure out how to push the flywheel around so I can do a visual inspection and see if I am missing teeth but I am not sure how or even if I can manually push the flywheel around so any advice on that as well would be valued.

On other question is are the starters the same on the V10 as they are on the 5.4 motors?

Best way to turn the motor is to use the bolt in the crank that holds the balancer on and a large ratchet. Yes both motors from 99-06 use that same starter. (Lester# 6646)

bad teeth, miss alignement of the starter, or weak bendix are all possibilities.

What would that be and where is it on the truck if I may ask?

Bendix drive - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's part of the starter.

I had a friend with a 99 F150 and his truck was doing the same thing. He replaced the starter and it was still grinding and not catching to start the truck at times. I decided to pull the starter and check the teeth on the flexplate and this is what I saw...

New flexplate later and he was good to go. Hopefully you'll have better luck than he did.
