It does have something to do with colder temps and sitting for at least 12 hours. The backflow device in the filter seems like the most obvious cause given the conditions, but I have had that sound with Fram(used them before I was educated), Purolator and now with Motorcraft. I could not reproduce the noise if I had to as it is so infrequent. I have only heard it 20-30 times over the last 2-3 years. Very unique sound never heard it out of any other mechanical device. Someone mentioned pistons rattling in the cylinder which seems far fetched and scary, but that is kind of what it sounds like too. I am not that concerned about this noise, with 97K more worried about tick getting louder.

This noise may be different than the others. I've had the starter drive (Bendix) rattle on disengagement once or twice on my V6 on a start after a cold soak. What you're describing sounds that way to me.

Timing chain, guide arms, chain tensioner all replaced didn't fix rattle. Had my truck for three weeks and charged me a 100 deductible for not fixing the problem. I already paid 4 grand for the premium b.s. warranty when I bought the truck. They also told me Ford engineering advised to not try and fix the issue.
So then Ford phoned today and said they have a fix..... Cam solenoid sensors. All 4 of em. So they want my truck again next week.

Had to park my F150, the dealerships and local machanics around here, want touch my truck because of a possible misalinment went putting it back together and locking up, I purchase my F150 5.4L used and we notice the rattle then and five years later it's still their. Here in Central Texas, it does not get too cold, but I'll change my oil to 5W20 and change filters. As many comments made on the rattle of the engine, do not know why Ford does not issue a recall.
I've also been told that it could be the timing chain going out or a valve going out or a cam phasor going out, I get the feeling that it's going to cost me a bunch of Ben Franklin's on this 5.4L with little over 150k miles. Thank a lot for your good comments Brother, God Bless you and family.

Knock at start up

I have a 2010 F-15O with a Triton 4.6L . I have noticed a slight knock when it sits overnight and you first start it up the next day.. Engine has only 44k miles on it. Runs like a clock, no knocking when driving. I have been changing the oil myself using Motorcraft synthetic blend 5w20 with a Fram filter. Any ideas what causes the knocking? Some times when first starting after sitting overnight it doesn`t knock? Sometimes it does?

I wouldnt put a Fram filter on my lawn mower. Seriously they are junk. Motorcraft, Wix, Purolator, and a few others are good. I have seen many engines die a early death from a Fram filter coming apart and plugging a oil passage.

X2. I haven't used Fram filters since the early 70's.
We had a piece of equipment that used a very expensive variable displacement hydraulic pump. Two weeks after it's routine service, which included a hydraulic oil and filter change, it went down. I had to check it out, no hydraulic pressure.
Long story short, the new Fram hydraulic oil filter had disintegrated and caused over $6,000 (that's 1970's dollars too.) in damage to the hydraulic system.
Fram's answer? Not our problem. (!) Haven't used them since.
