Ok noticed this a few times recently. On the first start up of the day, sometimes it sounds like something "rattles" in the engine before it comes tight? This only happens when I first start the truck from sitting overnight, if I run to the store, or at lunch go out, etc, it starts normally. I did have one of the pulleys replaced this past summer, it was making a whining noise so maybe the new belt they installed is loose? I know it could be any number of things.
I get this sometimes. I took it to the dealer twice so far. The first time they replaced the cam phasers (which were causing all sorts of noise). It didn't affect the startup rattle. The 2nd time they told me my cat was clogged and that I needed a new one. Plus I needed new spark plugs. I had them do the cat under warranty and I did the plugs. Rattle is still there. It seems less often. I've got the motorcraft filter and my truck only has 50k miles. I'm hesitant to take it back to the dealer because each time they charge me $80+tax.
Nope used the recommended oil, 5w20 synthetic blend I think, oil changed every 4k miles. I have that cam phaser tick as well, especially sounds like it on the passenger sidecof the engine, truck runs great, just that rattling sound on start up sucks
Yes. Filter should be a FL-820S...any easy shot in the dark would be to change it and see if it makes a difference.
The 820S can be found at most Wal-Marts for not much $$$. If that's not the filter you're using, then like the other guys have said, I strongly recommend you putting that in.

I got the same rattle on my 2004 150 5.4L with 150k miles, I I bought it used at Hemstead Motors, in Hemstead, Texas, they out of business now. No machanic want touch it, I've got it park in Lott, Texas near Temple, Texas. Just hate to put in all that money. The rattle has been their for five years, now getting worried and I'm told that it need phasor plus one value going out, do not what to believe. JP
I have the same on startup rattle. Had it since I bought the truck used 2-3 years ago. It has been discussed here a few times. Mine only happens in the winter normally after the truck sits for it's day of rest on sunday. It is a buuuurrrp and last for as long as a second or so. I use motorcraft and castrol 5/20w. It does have something to do with colder temps and sitting for at least 12 hours. The backflow device in the filter seems like the most obvious cause given the conditions, but I have had that sound with Fram(used them before I was educated), Purolator and now with Motorcraft. I could not reproduce the noise if I had to as it is so infrequent. I have only heard it 20-30 times over the last 2-3 years. Very unique sound never heard it out of any other mechanical device. Someone mentioned pistons rattling in the cylinder which seems far fetched and scary, but that is kind of what it sounds like too. I am not that concerned about this noise, with 97K more worried about tick getting louder.
Cofcmsc, Thanks for the update, I have always been asked if I had a diesel, which i did not, it's gas. My does it after it's been sitting up overnight. I was told to use castrol 5/20w, which i will do. I'm ready to try anything, your input was must welcome and if anybody else has a suggestion, shoot it my way. My F150 has little over 150k, all road miles. I'll get the codes from the Auto Zone computer and what Russell-Smith Ford gave me in Houston. Heck they wanted to change the engine, thanks alot brother,
John, F150 5.4L 4x4.
I have the rattle as well. I've only used the FL-820S and the Wix equivalent. I began using the Wix because they are purported to be a superior filter with a better ADV. It made no difference but I still use it because it has more volume due to its larger can.
As far as the oil I use Mobile 1 5W20. I use Mobile 1 in everything and I've always been pleased with its performance. I started using it in 1989 when I moved to IL from AZ. We had 2 weeks of -15 temps that winter. The oil was like jelly and took forever to circulate. The only commonly available synthetic at the time was Mobile 1 and I haven't been compelled to change to anything else.
Having the oil filter mounted sideways allows the oil to drain out into the sump. The low vis oil speeds this up. My wife's Windstar and my son's Taurus as well as my '96 Chevy 1500 all have the filter mounted with the open end up and none of them has ever made the cold start rattle that my F150 does. The Chevy and Windstar use 5W30 and the Taurus uses 5W20.
Hello Rudy,
I lived in your neck of the woods, I was working at Wood River, on an upgrade and was a member of the Shiner Marching band out of East St. Louis Shiner Temple. We march all over that part of the country, you have some beautiful country side, we all loved it, now I'm back in Texas. Had to park my F150, the dealerships and local machanics around here, want touch my truck because of a possible misalinment went putting it back together and locking up, I purchase my F150 5.4L used and we notice the rattle then and five years later it's still their. Here in Central Texas, it does not get too cold, but I'll change my oil to 5W20 and change filters. As many comments made on the rattle of the engine, do not know why Ford does not issue a recall.
I've also been told that it could be the timing chain going out or a valve going out or a cam phasor going out, I get the feeling that it's going to cost me a bunch of Ben Franklin's on this 5.4L with little over 150k miles. Thank a lot for your good comments Brother, God Bless you and family.
Regards,
John P (Country side in Central Texas)
