So with fuel prices being rediculous I don't drive the truck too much no more. But i've noticed every time I start it after its been sitting for over a day it sounds like the world is going to end. After about 5-10 seconds it sounds perfect, and runs just fine.
ANy ideas what's going on under the hood? Is this normal or do I need to start troubleshootin?
If you use a Fram or some other oil filter made by them, get rid of it. You need a filter with a silcon anti drainback valve. A motorcraft FL820S, or a Wix, Napa Gold (Wix in a Napa box) or Purolator. There are probably a few others out there that are good too.
Here's a good thread form the V10 forum. V10s and 5.4s use the same filter. There have been other threads in the oil forum too. I used to use a Fram on my '01 5.4 and had the same problem you described.
I am pretty sure I have a Napa Gold (made by Wix). I haven't crawled under the truck to verify, but thats what I gave to my valvoline guy to stick on there.
I am also running Full Synthetic 5W-30
Are you thinking I'm having a 'dry moment' on start up because all the oil is sinking out of the journals and galleys through the filter? I suppose I could have a bad filter though.
I have a Purolator Pure One on right now. It sits for 4 or 5 days at a time with no noise at start up. I use Motorcraft too, but the old style blue Pure Ones were on sale and I picked a few up. I've read that Purolator makes the MC filters.
I use MC 5W20 semi synthetic. The Your use of 5W30 should be OK, even though your motor is spec'd for 5W20. You might want to try 5W20 when you change your filer, just to see if there's a difference.
Oh. Taking a quality filter to the quick change guy doen't mean that they will put it on. A lot of the oil change places use the Pennziol or Quaker State filter, made by Fram. And often times they will put whatever bulk oil they have on hand in the motor and tell you that they put the proper weight oil in.
I am skeptical of the oil filter 'swaparoo' but haven't crawled under the beast yet.
Good info, the only issue is I'm not due for an oil change for at least another 5000 miles. Over the course of 6 months I've only put on a couple thousand miles or so, and that synthetic seems to hold quite well for a while.
However do you think these 'dry moments' are causing substansial wear to the engine? If so, screw it, I'll dump the $70 worth of oil b/c its WAY cheaper than a new motor. Maybe I can doop the oil change place into doing it for free
I can't really describe the noise... it's a little bit of everything at once. It is a grinding sound, mixed with chatters and pings... but not like the grinding of gears on a bad transmission (just for a reference sound). It doesn't sound very happy though, and happens the most frequently when the truck is parked on a hill.
