A question for all the experts on this board. I have an '86, 300 with about 103k miles (bought it new). Recently, after 3000 mile oil changes I get a rattling noise from the engine that starts about 30 seconds after I start up and goes away about 2 minutes later. Sounds very much like a a diesel or stuck lifters. Under load the engine sounds fine and is fine while hot. This all disappears after about 1000 miles on the oil. This is only on start-up. I am using 5w30 and a Bosch filter. Oil pressure jumps right up when I start it..... Anybody else had this problem??
I started a post about low oil pressure that lead to someone saying new "checkvalve" oil filters rattle on start-up. Dunno if Bosch is like that or not. They said switch to OE motocraft filters. $2.16 at Wal-mart.
I just noticed that mine does the very same thing. It sounds like a diesel within the first 10 - 20 seconds after startup. Although it has a motorcraft filter on it I can't say how old the filter is since I just bought the truck. I think I am going to try a new motorcraft when I pick it up from the muffler place.
Even my subaru does that. I may have to try a subaru brand filter as well.
go motorcraft FL-1A oil filter.
as for the rattle mine use to do it. espesially in winter. had the head rebuilt and solved the problem. more than likely you would be able to tell if it was valves rattling. makes kind of a clickedy click sound. pretty distinctive
There ia also a revised oil filter adapter that cures this problem . It has a spring & checkball that prevents any oil leakage out of the filter . It seems even using the Motorcraft filters lets the oil drain out of the filter which causes the noise when starting esp when hot . The part number is E4TZ 6890 A. It aint cheap but it will stop the start up noise .
My 300 was doing the same thing ,pulled it into shop the other night and changed oil. VO-1 filter 1qt. of lucas and 5 qts of10/w30 valvoline and rattle is gone for now. It is a 92 f-150 4x4
