I have a 81 Bronco with a 9" and it is leaking fluid out of the front of the third member. Is that the pinion seal that needs replaced? What is the difficulty of that? It doesn't seem to bad but I know there was some tricks that I don't know looking for some knowledge.
Thanks man! Im not sure what alls involved in fixing the pinion seal but if its alot you may loom into just rebuilding the axle then. I have a local shop here that will rebuild the axle and swap gears for me for $300 an axle labor. I just have to supply whatever parts I want. You should call around and see.
I wasn't fun when I did it on my 9''.. if I recall it uses a crush sleeve? I know there were a few parts I was told to replace when I did mine and I think one was the crush sleeve, also the pinion nut which wasn't fun to find.
At 200+ ft lbs, you need a really good e-brake to set that pinion nut, it's almost impossible when the third member is not in the axle... yeah, I took mine out, had to put it back in to remove the nut, then stupid enough I removed it again to play with things like backlash, then put it back in to tighten it. I don't think you actually have to remove the third member to remove the front seal
This was the first big job I had ever done though and I did finish it without any issues. Took a day.. but a full, grueling "work my butt off" day.
get it changed though, if you don't you will notice going through water that you fill your axle with water. ALSO, sometimes the vent gets clogged and causes oil to get forced through the seal, make sure the vent is unclogged, your seal might not even need changed.
