Can those dvds be reused in another truck? Both my truck and my dads would be nice to upgrade. There is so many roads that are not on the map. Stoney trail ring road around Calgary and most parts of the Henday ring road around Edmonton are not on current map.
I just received the update a few days ago. It is a package with 4 DVDs of programs and data. Very easy to install. Two are for the system and two are for the map updates and Gracenote. It brings the maps up to version 5.1. It took about two hours to complete the entire upgrade.
Too early to tell. I did notice updates to the POIs in my area. Now all the local restaurants show up. I also noticed that some fringe areas that didn't show up on the maps before are now there. I also noticed that now all the highways and major roads show their road type via the road sign and they also post the speed limit for the roads. I am happy with the update so far. At these prices I will only do it every two or three years, assuming there are enough updates to justify it.
In the past, people have simply ripped the DVDs to digital copies and made them available to all. There isn't any copy protection out there for DVDs that cannot be defeated... I'm not saying I have any personal knowledge of this of course, my experience is purely academic.
It can be done. The only exception is if they encode each DVD with an identifier unique to the nav unit. The cost of implementing such a system and then running each DVD as a unique item rather than part of a bulk run is prohibitive. They will lose a lot more money protecting the item than they will from pirates who would otherwise have purchased.

That's what I have heard as well................not that I've ever taken part in such a process......
The system update installs without any protection. The mapping updates come with a key. I had to supply information from my navigation screen when I bought the upgrade. I believe the key is generated from information from my navigation screen.
that makes sense... now, if we could only get a large enough sample of keys we could reverse engineer the encoding and make the mapping free for all as well! I mean, we could use it as a learning exercise. To learn, yes that's it.
