Ford Explorer as donor for 54 panel

Has anyone used the front and rear suspension from a Ford Explorer under a 53-56 F-100. I have seen some comments about using the rear, but never the front suspension. As opposed to the Crown Vic, the track seems to be closer to the F-100 and would eliminate tire/wheel issues. I'm also thinking about using a 2002-2005 with the independent rear suspension.

I have no problem with fuel injection and the electronics and am also considering using the engine. I know there are limited after-market mods available, but I think I can live with that.

Any comments? Thanks in advance.

I wonder about doing that also. I'm not sure what DMV would do with it. Is is a '99 with a trick body or a '52 on a new frame. I think in some states that will make a difference with emissions and such

I'm not sure. I guess I'm open to most anything that works. I don't want to make a major project out of this. I'd like to upgrade from stock, but I keep hearing the Volare ifs is a little weak and parts can be a problem (aside from not being from the blue oval). The Crown Vic front is apparently a little wide so wheels can be a problem, esp with a lowered suspension. For the rear, the Mark VIII/TBird IRS sounds like a good way to go.

Just not sure what will work. I want to build a truck that is confortable for long hauls and could handle well enough as a daily driver in city traffic. If there's one vehicletht I could use for front adn rear suspension and the drivetrain, that would be easiest I think. Is there a magic car that will work for that?

I'm just going to title mine as a '52. What's the wheel-base on the panel?

It's 110", but it can go about 112" if you center the fronts in the fender opening.

Title it as 54,there should be a # on the body . Some states will want the body number and the new frame number. Since the states treat it different,i would check with the local D.M.V . Myself in the state i live in if i had a title for the 54 ,that's how i would title it. Best to check your own area D.M.V. though.

Shouldn't really be any different than a Ranger frame swap.... minus the frame itself. Good luck!

How are you dealing with the curvature of the frame issues?

Going to try and start on it in the next couple of weeks. I'll let you know how it goes. Have "blue wrench and mig", anything's possible.
