49 Ignition Switch disassembly

Does anyone know the trick to get the key cylinder out of the ignition switch? I see the small metal tab, I have tried removing the tab but it won't come out, is there a trick? Thanks in advance for the help....

You carefully unscrewed the benzel ring on the outer dash side, right?

Push in on the pin until it clears the barrel

What Ross said, but I think you've got to have the key in it and have it turned on before the pin will push in. At least that's how the '51-'52 cylinders work.

will that would be my issue, I don't have the key... Hate to purchase a new switch. I was planning on buying the new cylinder and keys. I might have to break out the drill.

Yeah, I ran into the same thing recently. I did ultimately get it out without the key, but I roughed up the switch pretty good in the process. Keep an eye on eBay. They pop up with the key still in them about once or month or so. That's the route I went.
