You have old system. Best to convert to manual push button glow plugs.

You'll just need a momentary push button, run a wire to the GP solenoid purple wire terminal, make sure to remove the purple wire from solenoid so the truck can’t control them, and then find a ignition on hot wire in the cab, connect that to the one side of the momentary switch and the wire you ran to the purple wire terminal, to the other side, bam, done.

Nope. That thing that screws into the back of the head, is just the controller. All it does is tell the relay how long to keep the glow plugs on, depending on coolant temp.

But now with a manual switch, YOU will be in full control of the glow plugs. And by removing the purple terminal wire on the relay, that will disconnect that controller. So just leave it back there and forget about it.

Any push button switch will do, your local auto parts store will surely have one.

And any little wire, theres only 12V running through it.

Oh, and a good tip on mounting your switch, mount it somewhere on the left side of the steering column, so on those colder days, if you need to give it a shot of the glow plugs, while cranking, you can with your left hand.

Use at least the same size wire as the purple one you are removing, I don't know what gauge it is off hand. 12v has nothing to do with it, it's the amperage you are concerned about. You can't just use any switch either, there isnt a whole lot of current (amps) running through the GP control wire, but the switch needs to be big enough to handle the load. I'd go with a minimum of 10 amps on the switch... that's just my guess as I'm not sure how many amps runs through that circuit but a 2 amp switch would most likely burn up after some use.

The power going through the switch to activate the solenoid is minimal. The actual current for the glow plugs goes from the battery through the solenoid. In fact that is the whole point of the solenoid... so the power does not have to go through the controller, or switch.

You need to check for power to the big terminal on the relay that doesnt go to the glowplugs, it should have power all the time.

jump from constant power side to the small terminal. if no power to the other big terminal, the relay is bad, or the ground is bad.
