I plan on replacing my ball joints soon. I plan on getting the Moog ones with the grease fittings. I have read that thefitting will hit the knuckle unless they get ground down some. Can someone explan where and how much I should grind them down. This way I can have them all set to go when installing the joints. Thanks Jeff
Hmmmm...I've never heard that. But, that doesn't mean it isn't a real concern.
My friend put Moogs in his truck. Actually, my "HIS" truck now! LOL. I crack me up. Anyway, I haven't looked at it, but he didn't seem to say any grinding was necessary. when he did the install. I wouldn't think Moog would make a part for our trucks that wouldn't fit without alterations...they'd do it themselves to make sure it DID work before selling the product.
Maybe I'm way off. Hopefully someone who's done the install will know.
It is real. I replaced my front runs and installed the 90 degree fittings and sure thing - it broke off when the 4x4 was engaged.
If you use the straight fitting and screw it all the way in and that will not break off, but you have to use a slide/side type grease fitting on the gun. That works just fine. Moog does furnish the straight fitting, but I thought the other would work - wrong.
I am picking up the Moog ball joints tonight after work. You are saying that they come with both fittings? if not ill pick up some straight ones. thanks jeff

Yes, they do. You can install the small straight one in the top ball joint and the 90* one on the bottom one. I had some extra straight ones and chose to install them in both locations. I use the 90* Lincoln grease adaptor to lube the top one. I made a removable extension from an old dual head air chuck with the adaptor on one end and a 1/4" npt grease fitting on the other. It helps to reach up into the knuckle to get onto the fitting.
I did my ball joints a couple years ago. I installed the 90's and have had no Issues with hitting. I think it has to do with how much play you have in the universal joints and bearings. They do come close. A Curtis
Thanks, I plan on putting the straight one on top and the 90 on the bottom. This way after i put it all back together i can go without any worries. thanks Jeff
I have 90's on the top - their are a couple of different styles available. Bought a grease fitting kit @ Advance - the 90's I picked from the kit weren't much taller than a std fitting. I picked the shortest 90 I could find and have had them in for 4yrs w/o any trouble. It's close but they do clear by at least 1/4" when the knuckle is rotated to its closest point.
After re-doing my ball joints 4 times, I moved on to the Spicer/Raybestos brand. That was my personal choice. There are others too that you should consider, such as XRF.
Some folks might never have issues with Moog. But with my lifted truck, I definitely get to fully test out the quality. Moogs just don't hold up at all. They lasted far fewer miles than the Ford OEM ones.
I've also has the 90's installed on mine for about 4 yrs now. Biggest problem I've found with them is getting the knuckle out of the way so I can fit the "gun" in there to it.
