Correct Coolant Temperature

When I got home this evening, I partially drained the rad to below the level of the thermostat. I pulled the Motorad stat and replaced it with a Stant I picked up this morning from the parts store. Before installing the stat, I poured straight coolant into the intake until it was full, then installed the new stat, turned on the heater and started the truck. Eureka! Thermostat started opening around 182, temp climbed to a max of 198 then cooled down to mid 180s. And there was heat out of the vents. I haven't taken it for a spin, but feel confident that all is good. So the thermostat that I installed last winter was a dud, possibly right out of the box.

On a side note, I bought an E-Z-Red anti-freeze tester to check my mix, but it only shows a temperature, not the mix percentage, so I'm not sure what mix I ended up with.

You can test a T-stat to make sure it opens prior to installing it by dropping it in boiling water and watching it open. You can take one step farther by using a thermometer in the pot of water on the stove and watch the water warm up and see if the stat opens around the advertised temp.

Yes, it seems to be fixed. Took truck for a drive and after warming up to 198, cooled down to 182 then moved around in the 184-188 range. We head off through the mountains with our slide-in camper on Sunday and I'll report back on the difference when we get back.
