Louder exhaust

Hi I have a 92 f150 5.8 earlier this summer i had exhaust put on it. I said I wanted true duals but they said they couldn't so now it comes back as a single and then splits off before the rear axle into two. It had two cats on it and I was wondering if I took one off would it be a little louder or just be the same. And if taking one off would send off sensors or something?

thanks, Casey

if you take off the cats, it shouldnt set anything off. but its gonna be pretty loud. you can definitely put true duals on these trucks, thats a shame that they talked you out of it so quick.

I'd just put a Y pipe in place of the muffler and keep both cats. The stock cats do a good job as mufflers. That sounds really good. If you jsut want the sound, this is the way to go.

Some areas won't do it, since they have to remove OEM emissions components. Many shops won't do that, unless they are needing to be replaced. I don't see what the problem is, especially if you put cats back on it, when installing the duals.

Well theres a few ways you can accomplish loud.
1, do you have to deal with emissions? If not...Hehehe..
Do you want to set off alarms? Annoy people to all hell, and sound like a nascar? If so, use piping from the manifolds to about the middle/back of the cab. No mufflers, cats, anything. You'll set off car alarms, can't sneak around, and will get people to hate you.
I'd get two flowmaster 40 series, and get true duals and have them dumped right before the rear axle. Sounds great, no one hates you, and you can still sort of sneak around if it calls for it.
Another exhaust set up i'd love to go with is true duals, Borla..or cherry bomb glasspacks about a foot or two away from the manifolds with piping out the sides.
Just a few ideas to get you started.
My 351 I ran just straight pipes, but it was..modified..before it died.

When I finally get true duals on my truck, its getting a pair Dynomax Ultraflo Welded mufflers.

I currently have a Magnaflow, and it sounds good, but its too mild.

I would not run turndowns, unless you want alot of interior noise. Also, unless the motor has been built up some, turn downs will sound like a UPS truck on a stock motor.

Why do so many people like Flowmaster? Ugh...

I've had more experience with Flowmaster, rather than Magnaflow..lol I prefer personally Dynomax, and Borla. I Love the bullet mufflers.

I run no cats, 2 1/4" ture duals, and two chambered Thrush "Welded" (what Thrush calls them) mufflers. Lots of people say its kinda loud, but that it has a deep, throaty tone, and aggressive sound when I get on it. Lol.

BTW they are $30 each, vs $60 each for Flowmasters.

Its pretty much the same as a Flowmaster Original 40.

Thank you to everyone for giving me idea's. I might try taking just one cat off and see what is sounds like. I probably can't go too loud because I pull stocktailer and I wonder if taking both of them might get a little noisy with a full load of cows?

We used to have a 351 Windsor. It was loud, we didnt have cats on it but we did have a muffler. We ran it back to the muffler which ended up right below the passenger and then immediatly ran a bent pipe out the side. It was loud as hell, you could barely talk in the cab it was so loud.

My 96 with a 302 has a straight pipe off the cats and it is surprisingly quiet. A few guys didnt believe me till they looked under for themselves. Easy enough to remove one cat and test it out for sound. the back cat doesnt usually have a sensor after it anyway so it wont trip a code. Come to think of it your O2 may be located in the y pipe and both could be removed (laws permitting) without engine codes.

Another good idea for true duals ive seen is to come from the headers/manifolds down to an X pipe and mount the single O2 sensor right in the middle of it, then to two single cats (if necessary) and on to mufflers and so on.
