EGR Delete???

Hi All,

I have seen many post about this subject, but not sure what the purpose is? Does the EGR delete increase the performance of the truck?

What are the benefits?

thanks,
Brook

(legal disclaimer)For the record, it's illegal to remove the EGR system and drive the truck/SUV on public roads. If you remove it, it can only be used for off-road operation. With that legal disclaimer out of the way....the EGR cooler has a tendency to leak when it's starved of coolant after the oil cooler plugs. The later 6.0L (late '04-'07) are more susceptible since there was a design change in the cooler for the late '04 and on trucks. The leak lets coolant into the intake of the truck and sets up a hydro-lock potential as well as over-pressurization of the cooling system. Allot of shade tree mechanics will say your head gaskets are shot when actually it's the EGR cooler allowing the exhaust gases/pressure into the cooling system. Some folks feel they're better off deleting the EGR cooler...removing it from the truck. To each thier own...there are several high mileage trucks that still have their complete emissions system intact.

Egr system is also the messenger that the oil cooler is/has plugged up. I prefer to leave it intack and keep my truck up to date on maintenance.

it depends how u loook at it. if u live in a place with emissions testing, then u would be better off getting a bulletproof egr cooler.

if ur like me and dnt have testing, u will probably want to delete it becuase there have been coolers that have reptured even with an oil cooler that was clogged. to me, its just a way to possibly cause a problem by it rupturing. but also, as they said, if u keep up on maintnace, the OEM one should be fine. i also look at it as i do, its a very inefficient design. it causes a lot of backpressure and with the delete, people see much better throttle response.

I get alittle better MPG with it gone 1-2 MPG you get a little better Bang in the cylinder when you dont recycle a spent gas thats NON COmbustible Back into the cylinder
the intake manafold stays clean, and I dont have to worrey about that egr cooler rupture and hydrolock

Gauges are the best messenger you could have.

If a blown egr cooler is your messenger its to lait. to me a blown egr cooler isnt a messenger its a Failure. Cause your done driving it at that point

If you live in a state with diesel smog just buy the block off plate(or make one) the goes on the inlet to the EGR cooler on the exhaust. Hell, I know a guy who just welded the EGR exhaust inlet shut. Keeps all the required parts on the truck..

The only problem with putting a block off plate on the EGR cooler is the later truck will through a code for low EGR flow. If the state you live in does it's emissions testing by way of the OBD port...your truck will fail. Low EGR flow would send a red flag as a truck not meeting emission requirements. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for making these engines more efficient. Lord knows the fuel isn't getting any cheaper. I'm just pointing out that if you put the plate in there...depending on year, the truck may or may not through a code.

In Ca we just have visual check. I had to do it last year. I dont remember him connecting up to the OBD port.
Guess I could call the smog shop and see what they all do.
Dont the 2004 not have a EGR flow issue?

Last time I checked emission requirments here I had to call the county health dept. and they tell you the criterea

As far as a CEL and egr flow issues I beleive it all depends on the stratigy thats programed to the truck

I don't live in a state/municipality that does smog checks...so I don't know all the hard facts on what is/isn't checked. I've heard of sniffers stuck in the end of the tailpipe. I've heard of them hooking up to the OBD port. And the vistual inspection. I guess it depends on where you live and how the enforcement codes are written as far as how they do the testing.

Like Benny already pointed out, it depends on the strategy your truck is running. The early ones didn't look for it, while the later ones do. My EGR system is intact, so I don't know if my '08 re-flash will/would through a low flow code. I know it will when the EGR valve is unplugged...that that isn't the same thing.
