FICM

Hey guys- I have a quick question about the FICM voltage.

I know that its supposed to run at 48V, but whats the acceptable range?

My F350 runs at 48V rock solid and hardly fluctuates at all - maybe .5V or so.

My new Excursion on the other hand had a code for "FICM Performance" when I bought it last week, and was fluctuating between 35V and 38V when cold, and would fluctuate between 42V and 47V when it warmed up.

The dealer agreed to change the FICM - I took it in today and got it changed, and now it seems to be fluctuating between 47V and 48V. I cant check to see what it is when cold until tomorrow morning.

I just want to make sure that its ok for it to fluctuate a little bit - like I said, my truck is rock solid at 48V almost all the time. Is there a range that is acceptable or should it stay right at 48V all the time.

Thanks!
JR

It seems to be generally agreed that if it is below 45V at any time, it should be replaced. Sounds like your new one is fine. Next time you should send it to FICMRepair.com to get it repaired (unless it is under warranty, i suppose) as it is a lot cheaper than having the dealer replace it and it should be "stronger" when it comes back!

Thanks for the info!

The dealer agreed to replaced it as a condition of me buying it since it was throwing a code, and his PSD tech acknowledged that it was a pretty standard issue, so no money out of my pocket (it cost them $550 for the part, plus whatever labor cost), and I'm happy to have a new one to start with.

If I have any other problems, I definitely plan on getting it rebuilt instead of spending another $550!

Sadly, very, very few get by for only $550. Most dealers set up their customers with bills in the $1100-$1300 range. Ouch.
