Back up Camera

I'm looking at installing a backup camera but I'm not sure on how or where to mount it. I remember seeing someone installed one in the handle on the tailgate but have searched and searched and can't find it. How is everyone mounting their's? Looking for ideas.

I think you can get a license plate frame camera for around 100$. I think they're color, but not night vision capable. I have seen the tailgate handle cameras too.

After backing into a couple of very large poles set in concrete on some dark nights and having a small black Ford Focus with a stupid female talking on a phone run into the back of me while I was very slowly backing down a very dark garage (car is so small it couldn't be seen in my 3 mirrors)...I finally ponied up and purchased a back-up camera for about $150 that is color and provides night-vision.

Another great thing, if small children live nearby, it helps to ensure none have crawled, ran or ridden behind you from the time you looked behind the rig and when you got in and started to back up.

Search my posts and I think you'll find more info...along with the one time I was distracted because my wife was with me, and I failed to use my camera...so long tailgate. B-(

Rusty: I bought a Pyle PLCM105 with a mirror mount for the receiver and a small round camera. I made a small aluminum angle mount and mounted it to the end of the bed, between the tailgate and the bumper. It worked well there, but the resolution on the camera was not good. I also wanted to run it as a monitor, but was told by Pyle not to keep it on all the time. So I removed it and returned it for credit.

Consider doing your in-dash sound system at the same time, many of these already have the screen you need for the camera and you can really upgrade your stereo features while you're at it.

I don't have a picture, but if you have the factory bumper, I got a camera off Amazon for $30, and it has been in for about a year so far. No problems, looks better that the camera off a BMW no kidding. Auto iris switches to infrared at night. I have it mounted opposite the hole for the spare tire. It looks symmetric and the hole was 1-1/8" I believe.

Camera is XO vision HTC35. It only got 3 of 5 stars, but it seems if you got a good one, you are good to go; but at $30 it is worth a try

Forgot to mention one of the really nice features of my license plate frame mounted camera...I can literally place the ball right under the hitch when hooking up to a trailer. Not a big issue with a small trailer, but it is a major convenience with a heavy trailer or a heavily loaded trailer.

The camera came with 3-4 angle adjusters that allowed me to swap out to obtain just the right angle to provide the best overall view.

I have it wired so that it is powered up anytime the rig is running. This allows me to take a look behind me to check hitch, trailer etc., while I'm motoring down the road. Easy install.
