Not a tech here but this sounds familiar to a problem I had in my 05 shortly after buying it. I even took it to the local ford garage because it was still under warranty. The tech couldn't find anything wrong but admitted that it just wasn't running strong.
My truck had very similar symptoms very quiet, no codes, ran smooth but weak, but mine would not build above 19 lbs. boost. It ended up being the underhood FICM fuze (#12 I believe). I stumbled across it after driving it that way for months and was shocked at the difference it made. I have no idea how it could blow and not throw a code. It hasn't blown since and I have no idea why it blew to begin with.
I did a search on Ficm fuses to find out which one one where talking about. It appears to me that there is only one. Isn't that the fuse you are supposed to pull when performing any type of test when you do not want the engine to fire? That being said I dont see how you could have had a blown fuse and your truck still run. But any way i did check mine and it was good. Thanks for trying
Yup thats what I was saying, mine was blown and still ran, don't know why, don't know how, but ran it for months like that until I finally figured it out. I can pull the thing now and it will go right back to how it was running then. It was worth a shot.
EDIT: Just went out and checked again, and it is underhood fuze 20 not 12. Started my truck and pulled underhood fuze 20 and it runs.

Is it the mini fuse or relay you are talking about? When you pulled it did your truck run any different? if so could you please elaborate? Thanks Man
I was doing some research and realized that your 04 probably has a completely different underhood fuse panel than my 05. Mine has quite a few mini fuses and relays while yours most likely has 4 relays and 2 mini fuses. That said, me giving you fuse number is a lost cause.
When I pull the FICM fuse #20 in my truck it seems much quieter (less injector rap), it still runs smooth but lacks power, and the turbo will not boost over 19PSI. I guess it would be what people call limp mode.
I apologize if I caused any confusion for you, just trying to help out.

AHH that make seens was going crazy searching for #20 fuse and couldnt find it. Yes my late 04 has two under hood fuse panels. 1 of them with only relays and the other 1 has 4 relays and on 1 mini fuse in it. You still may be on to something here.maybe i have a bad Ficm relay because what you describe when you pull your fuse it exactly what my truck sounds like. does limp mode throw a code on these trucks?
