Hub Assembly

How do i change out the front hubs? inbetween 10-20 mph i get a grinding noise in my left front area. but i can hit the brake and it almost goes away. replaced the rotor since it was warped anyways and sound didnt go away. local good mechanic said it sounded like a wheel bearing in the hub and that its a whole unit. i dont have the money to pay him to do it because of the cost of the hub and college so i was wondering how hard it was to do and how to do it. thanks!

IIRC there is a thread in the tech folder on how to do that but if not check the SD/HD forum for the procedure. I know there is a complete overhaul procedure here somewhere. It may be incuded with the ball joint replacement procedure for 4x4's.

rdunagan,
It is not a bad job if you have all the parts ahead of time. I did the passenger side and made a list of all the part numbers I used for future reference when I need to do the d-side. I'll try to post them for you later. May even be able to find the directions I used.

Your going to need to make yourself a tool from a pipe nipple and floor flange.

search "unit bearing " and I hear tell it's best to buy the 4 studs also in stead of trying to pull the old ones

Here is a link to removing ball joints which also covers removing the unit bearings Ford Super Duty Ball Joint Replacement Procedure | Superdutypsd.com
the difference is the locking hubs have 3 screws and the older ones had a retaining ring. other than that it is not a bad job to do. I pull the unit bearings on my 2002 and grease it once a year.
