The backup (reverse) lamps work thru the Neutral Safety Switch (NSS), located at the bottom of the steering column thru 1977.
C7TZ-7A247-A .. NSS (Motorcraft SW-600) / Obsolete from Ford / Available from autoparts stores.
Applications: 1967/77 F100/350.
-------------------------------
The NSS is operated by a spring steel selector lever. It snaps onto the shift tube thru a hole in the mast jacket (steering column shroud). Its knife blade end fits into the NSS.
What happens to it: The knife blade end is notorious for snapping off, and/or it loses tensile strength and falls off the shift tube. When either occurres, the truck can be started in any gear.
