Sorting through some of the minor problems that I have on my truck I think I have came across an important one. My reverse lights don't work on my pickup at all. This is what I have so far. The neutral safety switch works perfectly as do the wires. But I think the steering column is missing the shift placement tab that fit to the shift tube in the steering column. Is there a way to fix this? I have talked to my autoshop teacher about it and he said that it was a common ford problem for that to happen and the only solution he had was to rig a toggle switch up to turn the lights on that way. I personally don't like that at all and was wondering if there is another way to fix it as toggle switches don't look good or original.
Richard, You say "The neutral safety switch works perfectly as do the wires." I think you need to define more clearly what you mean. If it is working perfectly, you should have power for your lights.
When looking down there you should be reminded of a gear selector visually.

But I think the steering column is missing the shift placement tab (NSS Selector Lever) that fit to the shift tube in the steering column.
DOTZ7B097B .. NSS Selector Lever / Ford just obsoleted this part several months ago.
But...there are dozens upon dozens still to be found at dealers, obsolete parts vendors.
DON SANDERSON FORD in Glendale AZ has TWO = 623-842-8762.
ARTESIA FORD-MERCURY in Artesia NM has THREE = 575-746-3578.
JST AUTOMOTIVE in Lebanon TN has FOUR = 615-443-3086.
WOLFE FORD in Lidgerwood ND has SEVEN.
GREEN SALES CO. in Cincinnati OH has ELEVEN = 800-543-5959
PARTS INTERNATIONAL in Farmers Branch TX has 17 = 888-727-0418.
Besides these, there are another 101 scattered around the US at dealers, obsolete parts vendors.

This spring steel lever snaps onto the shift tube thru a hole in the mast jacket (steering column shroud).
What happens to it: The tip snaps off, or it loses tensile strength and falls off the shift tube.
This lever fits: All 1965/77 F100/350's with A/T (DOTZ7B097B replaced DOTZ7B097A & C5TZ7B097A).
btw: The same NSS fits 1967/77 F100/350's: C7TZ7A247A (Motorcraft SW600). It's also obsolete, but many can be found.
Thanks for the help so far guys. John what I mean is I do have power and the lights do come on the truck when you play with the switch manually. There is nothing however at the base of the column that will activate the switch. I think Numberdummy (bill) has hit this one on the head though if I can find theNSS Selector Leverthis might be the solution to my problem if its as easy as he says it is. It might be better for me as well to order two or three of them if they will keep giving me problems like that. I have personally come to like reverse lights. I can see whats behind me especially well with them in the dark, and I'd like to get these working again as it is a bear to back up at night without them.

You shouldn't have too much trouble finding the NSS Lever (DOTZ7B097B), since I found and listed 44 of them in post #4.
what if you can adjust the neutral safety switch and never get power to the lights? i know the manual transmissions have a back up light switch, do the automatics? My 72 has been in our family since new, and i dont ever remember the back up lights working. I thought I could adjust the nss and fix it (used to have push up the gear shift to start the truck) but ive never had any luck. i started to get a back up light switch, but i could only find one for standards..

I ran into the same problem you did when I went searching for a back up light switch for my 72. What you will need to do is look up neutral safety switch as it is this switch that controls you back up lights on a automatic truck. Heres a list of the ford part numbers for the switch (DOTZ7B097B replaced DOTZ7B097A & C5TZ7B097A) You can cross reference these numbers at a napa carquest or what ever auto parts store you use. Be cautious though they can cost a pretty penny for a new neutral safety switch last I checked it was 75.00 at my local napa.

Thanks for all your help Bill. I did get one from a Ford dealership that had 2 in stock in Raton New Mexico. However I did get the lever put on and I can't get the alignment right on my column in relation to my switch. Is it correct for the switch to be held all the way to the left side in order for the lights to come on (thats how mine work anyways)? If not I was thinking that it might have dirty contacts that keep it from turning on when I shift into reverse?
oh ok...there is a local place here in okc that deals in obsolete parts...they have a nss for 67-77 f100/350 for $24.95. says in the book it replaces C7TZ-7A247-A. www.classicautoparts.com....i have bought quite a bit from these guys..
