Hi All,
This problem has really got me down on my truck, I'm just not sure what to look for.
First, I'm pretty sure my glow plugs are bad, I bought a set of ZD9's but was waiting for a warm break in VA weather to plan on putting them in.
My problem -
If I plug the truck in for a few hours (block heater) it turns over easy but idles rough and then shuts off. I have to crank it for 2 or three 15 second tries to get it to start. then I have gently prod the gas pedal to get it to stay running.
Once running for a few minutes it runs great and will start right up after coming out of a store or something.
Taking it to work I go out every couple of hours and start it for a few minutes and it has no problems.
Along with glow plugs,it sounds like you have an air intrusion problem. The most common place for air intrusionis the o-rings under the caps in the return line system. An injector install kit will give you all the parts to make a new return line system.
I second the air intrusion problem. If the return line repaier kit don't fix it then the guys on here can wolk you thru the rest of the system to get the problem worked out.
When you do the return lines replace the rubber fittings on the steel lines coming from the fuel filter there like a rubber compression fitting. You might have to get them from an injector shop or ford.
