After work today I stopped at the Tom Thumb gas station to fill up my truck. I filled up and the total was $48.00 I went to the window and gave the clerk a $50.00 Dollar Bill. The clerk, who was also the manager, (all of 20 years old), told me it was company policy not to accept bills larger than a twenty as they have a limited change fund. I told him I could see where that would be a problem if I was buying a pack of gum or got $5.00 in gas but since my total was $48.00 what was the big deal? He refused to accept my fifty and I ended up paying with 3 twenty's. I felt like bashing my face into the window because I was so frustrated with this genius. I should have let it go...but i was filled with righteous indignation and gave the guy a quick math lesson! He just looked at me like I was the biggest loser in the world. Oh well...at least the gas was "cheap"
Profanity Removed..he didn't realize that he was returning 3 bills ($12) and could have been returning 2 bills ($2). That's spooky, obviously not the sharpest tool in the shed.
Since US money says "This note is legal tender for all debts, public and private" no business can refuse to take any bills. It can be there policy to "prefer" not to take bills over $20, but they can't refuse $50s and $100s, no matter want some ahole behind the counter says. Next time, give him the $50, and if he refuses, thank him for the free gas.
yea alot of gas stations around here won't take bills over 20
but since your total was 48 bucks he only had to give you 2 dollors...that guy is kinda weird
If you are not frustrated everyday with these minumum wage dopes, you are a better man than I am.
We went to a (Popular Department Store) last week and our bill came to $6.25
My wife handed the girl $11.25
The cashier looked at me, shaking her head in disapproval and said 'Da poor Dear' (Like Granny is deaf as well as stupid) pushed the $1.25 back at her and took the $6.26 out of the ten.
These are the stupid equal opportunity people they seek.
Doesn't matter if it's "legal tender" or not, they don't HAVE to accept it. If their company policy is nothing bigger than a $20, that's what they will take. And no, it doesn't mean you can walk away without paying. That would be called theft, and around here anyway, leaving a gas station without paying means loosing your license. I agree, it's totally ridiculous he didn't take it in that instance. Any 12 year old should know $2 change is less than $12.
My dad used to buy diesel from gas stations for our tractors in plastic drums, not sure of their size. One day someone at the counter complained that the drums weren't the right color and that they wouldn't let us pay for the fuel. My dad, having a good sense of humor, offered to dump the fuel onto the parking lot if they didn't wanna take his money. They finally let him pay for it but he buys in bulk now.
I realize he didn't set the policy and was not all that smart, but part of the reason for the policy is that in having a limited change fund they rely on the smaller bills you pay with to replenish the change fund. He should however been able to realize that 2 one dollar bills are not going to terribly deplete his fund and he could then just put the $50 in the drop safe to prevent it from being stolen and continued his day.
