How Dumb Is This?

Yeah, I woulda told the guy it was all I had. And if he had told me that I had to leave my license while I went to break it, I would drag him over the counter and make HIM drive me to break it!
That's just foolish of him not to take it for a 48 dollar charge.
Oh well.

How Dumb Is This?

My approach would have been different.

I would have been like his 3 rd grade teacher.

"If I have 50 apples and I give you 48 of them.... how many would I have left" ?

His repsonse : " Huh ?"

My response 50 minus 48 = 2.

So... here is 50 George Washington's that you can put in your floor safe out of site ....out of mind >

Now ....I need 2 George Washington's back.... thanks

it may also have been a case of their regional managed had told them that accepting anything larger in a 20 will get them fired immediatly no questions asked. I know at the Switfty stations that is the rule I've had friends that worked there. I work at wendy's and the only time we don;t like large bills is when the person orders a 99 cent coke and pays with a 20, that really makes me mad, or some idiot passes a 50 for 2 dollars worth of food and then get offended when you ask them if they have something smaller, (you know they do because if you're paying attention you can see the 3 1s in their wallet. But I agree that he should had taken the 50 for the 48 bucks in gas.

How Dumb Is This?

Is there a problem in the staes with counter-feiting $50's.
Up here they havea $10.00 counter-feiting problem.

To me that could be the only reason.

Go figure ..Let's make something at is worth $5.50 US.

Otherwise, what difference should it make if it's 3x20's or a 50 +10 ?
They can still slip into the slot on the floor safe.

Doh !

Come on Mil1ion even with our recent re-valuation of Canadian Dollars why would anyone make funny $10's? The new ones are way to difficult to copy with their Holo-Tech and Anti-Counterfit Designs to be worth it.
But you did hit the Counter Commando explanation right on. Corporations limit there losses of accepting funny money because traditionally counter-feiting operations only worked $50.00 bills & up. The reason is basically a margin return on investment, print medium and now copy medium of high enough calibre is extremely expensive. So that's the real reason they will not accept anything over $20.00 Bills.

It's a Cashless Society North of the 45 anyway.

I'm gonna look at this from the point of view of a counter-jockey, cause I used to be one.
There are some really crappy companies to work for, and as we all know, the less they pay you, the more like a moron they treat you.
It's entirely possible, and not uncommon, that this kid had been told that he was NOT to accept anything larger than a $20, and fears that doing so will get him canned...
Now, if it were me, I'd have done what ever it took to make the cust happy, and deal with management later. But, not all kids have the same belief in common sense..

I can understand the not wanting to take a fifty, even though it doesn't make much sense when you have a gas bill that high. I thought that the 20 dollar bill was the most counter-feited because it is so common. Anyways, I think I would have said that's all I had (since I probably wouldn't have had that many 20's) and if he said he couldn't take it ask if they could make change and give you two 20's and a 10. You never know, they might go for it. I probably would have just gave him the 50 and told him to keep the change. Glad I don't live in the metro areas where I'd have to deal with that kind of stuff

Wink How Dumb Is This?

There must be a good end coming out of this post, or at least a reasonable mind meld. I really worry that our young are actually intimidated by minimum wage jobs and being administered by jr managers who have a couple of weeks more experience and who get the same minimum wage pay rate.

????
Wait a minute.
I got lost in a 60's minute there again.

Back to the CardLock for me. Bad Canadian!

How Dumb Is This?

Hi- I can top off mine for like 55 bucks when it's 149.9/gal so I know you'll just have to go back in about a week or so James. Get your Grants worth- put 48 in, grab a budwiser quart and make the kid eat the fifty bucks

I see the good side of this post, at least the Y-generation smackdic was doing it in english

The real reason stores don't accept anything larger than 20.00 is that the clerks can't figure out change if it's more than the number of fingers and toes. Once had a clerk say he'd only take up to 18.00. When I saw he had lost two fingers playing with a firecracker, I understood why. Seriously though, when was the last time you had a clerk actually count your change back to you properly and say "Thank you"? The till usually tells them how much change to give back, and they don't have a clue about how to count back your money. Next time you're feeling low and mean spirited just say "whoa, can you count back my change please? I think that till display might be wrong." You'll probably get the senior supervisor called in from his golf game to help.

There's a grocery store in town where if you pay with a 20 or larger they make a mark on it with a special pen which is supposed to detect counterfiet ink. Maybe that gas station should invest in one of those.

How Dumb Is This?

I am so glad I live around the area that I do. Surprisingly enough, when I go buy food or gas or whatever, people actually do still count the money out in most cases. When they don't, I stand right there in front of them, in full view of the camera, and will count it back to myself, usually aloud, so they get the picture and I know I'm not being ripped. I don't particularly care if there's a line or not. If they did their jobs, I wouldn't have to do it for them.

I worked a concession stand at the local rodeo for years and that's the only way I knew I was giving it back to them correctly becuz it was all in my head. I added it up aloud right in front of them and gave them their total, got their change and counted it back to them. It was a common sense thing! DUH!!!

Now, around here, they aren't allowed to take anything bigger than a 50 after like 8 or 9 pm but I had a friend who worked at a place, who has brains, and he'd take it and make change, and then after they left, he'd get a coupla 25.00 rolls outta the drop safe and put the 50 back in so the till came out right. They're also not supposed to keep more than 50.00 in their tills at any point in time after like 8 or 9 at the convenient stores here for theft purposes. That makes sense but all you have to do to get money outta that safe is press the button corresponding to the amount you need ...

I think I would have said that's all I had (I rarely take my whole wallet with me to the gas counter anyway unless I'm writing a check.) I'm just obnoxious enough to "presume to tell these people" their own jobs. I hate ignorance of common sense things. Now, I don't do it rudely unless they have given me an attitude and then they'll get their attitude right back and I don't care if it's 3 am and they have to call their manager from whereever they live, that is plain ridiculous and I think I'd fill out a complaint form but leave the worker's name off the form itself. That way it's not a tattletale kind of deal but an honest complaint on the "company policy" as they put it.

Just my 2 ¢.

How Dumb Is This?

Here in Oregon you can't pump your own gas, unless you go to the card lock places. Usually I just pull up to an empty pump, almost immediately someone comes up and I say, "hi, fill it with plus please, cash." By the time I have said that sentence they have the cap off and start filling. By the time the nozzle clicks they're walking back from another customer, recap the Bronco, take the money and go make change. I spend maybe a minute and a half of non-fueling time at the station. If I'm in a hurry I just tell them to give me $20 and then it's down to maybe thirty seconds. There are only so many hours in the day, the more you pump per hour-the more profit you make.

I had to take a trip to California about a month ago. Pulled up to a station down there and got in line. It was taking 7-12 minutes of non-pump time for people to get gas in their cars-even for just $10 worth.

Finally, I got up to the pump. One of my first jobs was pumping gas and I use the card locks at work all the time. Figured, no problem. Well, they had different buttons for the amount, type, payment method, plus a scrolling screen there to tell me how stupid I am.

After a minute or two of frustration I walked in and got in line. In a few minutes my turn came up. I stood at the counter and told the girl, "I want to fill it on number three please." She asked me, "how much?" I told her I didn't know, because I was going to fill it up. She tried to explain to me that she had to have a number, while at the same time I was trying to explain to her I didn't know for sure how much it would take to fill up. Finally, I just asked her how much she wanted. She just kind of looked at me, like I was a stupid man. At that point I just said, "how about 40 bucks?" She took the money. I went back outside and after a deep breath figured out the pump and filled the tank. I topped it at $36.50. Went back inside and got in line again. The girl was gone, (probably taking a break from me). I had to explain all over again that I filled it, to get my change. The fuel cost over $2/gal. and I was there over twenty minutes.

I used every fuel mileage driving trick I know to get back over the border into Oregon before filling again. It was about 10 o'clock at night and I pulled up and asked the old guy to fill it. (At $1.89/gal.) While that was happening and he was washing my windshield, I went in and bought two hot dogs and a cup of coffee for a buck and a half-Total, (no sales tax). Went back out and chatted with the guy till the tank filled. I gave him the cash and he made change right out of his pocket-and I was out of there.

It was good to be home.

Yeah, we have 1 place around here that I know of that's not self serve. I, usually, pay at the pump with a debit/credit card or a gas card from whichever station I'm at ... I have more than one. It's really easy that way, slide the card the same direction the pictures shows, press the button for which type/price, pick up the corresponding handle and go for it. The receipt prints out right there and you're off without ever making human contact. I was with a friend and we decided we couldn't make it the rest of the 12 miles home so we stopped at that station that's not self serve and she just goes ... duh ... you mean I don't have to pump it? How much extra does that cost? Are you crazy? (tires squeal). I think they wanted an extra like 20 - 50 cents per gallon to pump it themselves. Sorry but I ain't helpless and don't mind doin' it myself to save money.

Thats funny because if he takes twentys, he's not going to use those for change if they are not taking anything higher than a 20. I would say that management told him to do that, and he was just doing what he was told to do.
