On my 2008 f350 with a v10 just had the check engine light come on. I hooked my scanner up to it and it give me a code p0451. I am just about to go on a trip today. Is it ok to drive it like this, what does this code mean. Thanks.
It's ok to drive. It just means that your fuel tank/cannister can't hold a vacuum when it tests for it. Or, not sensing a vacuum. That's how the computer detects if there is a leak in your fuel system. Could be as simple as a bad gasket in your gas cap.
It's almost like driving with your gas cap off. That light is annoying, though.
Last year at emissions inspection I was told to get a new gas cap. I did, however, my check engine light came on. I had two mechanics check on the code and they said not to worry about it. Well, this year I failed the emissions test and went to another mechanic. He said I needed a Ford factory gas cap, which I purchased and put on. He reset the codes to ready and within a few hours the light was back on. Now the mechanic wants to drop (?) the gas tank to look for leaks. I am starting to get into real money on a 2004 suv with 128,800 miles on it. I called Emissions Control as directed on their website to see if there is a waiver or alternative and left two messages no return calls yet. My tags expire in 4 days. Any ideas?
Thanks,
