Hi. 97 Explorer keeps pulling this code. Inspected gas cap looks and seems to work OK. Looked at lines from Gas tank, no loose connections or spllits. Will take off spare to look at Evap cannister. Assume lines and fittings to Evap cannister are OK, am I safe in assuming this is the problem. Is there a way to clear or service that eval cannister or should I just replace it (about $70) or should I seek more professional diagnosis of the problem?
I have an 2005 Explorer with the 4.0 and just this past weekend the Check Gas Cap light came on, it has about 65,000 miles and i was wondering if anyone has suggestions? I replaced the gas cap and the light still shows.
The code won't clear right away. I forget how many start cycles you have to go thru before the check engine light goes out if a gas cap is at fault.
I have a code reader that allows me to clear the code, (shuts the light off) then I wait and see if the code shows up again.
Disconnect the battery for 15 minutes and the codes will clear. That code can be caused by the gas cap not being on properly. It's best to clear the code and see if it comes back before throwing parts at it.

Usually about 4-5 good heat cycles and the code will clear if the gas cap is back on the right way.
