I have a 1998 E-250 van with the 5.4 ltr engine. My check engine light has been on for a while so a buddy of mine pulled some codes for me and they are,
P-0420 B L Cat
P-0171 Too lean B1
P-0174 Too lean B2
I am not mechanically inclined whatsoever and I can't afford to pay Ford $95 per hour for diagnostics. Where do I start and what do I do? Any and all help is appreciated
Any idea what scanning tool he used? Unless its just a code reading typically there is a feature suggesting which component or system to begin checking.
Someone here should know these codes or doing an online search might help sooner though. Posting this in the Modular V8 Forum might get quicker and very knowledgeable replies too.
Welcome to the forums----its fun in here most of the time!
The important codes are the lean codes. They can indicate a vacuum leak. The catalyst code could be a result of the lean codes, so I would ignore that code for now.
To diagnose a leak get a good size can of WD40. With the engine idling in park spray around every intake manifold connection. Where it mates to the throttle body, where it mates to the heads, each vacuum line connection, etc. If the idle speed goes up when you spray an area you have found a vacuum leak.
