i6 identification question
I have a quick question for you. As part of a recent property acquisition, I ended up with a 64 ranchero with an i6 and three on the tree. I'm looking to make it into a runner for commuting in the rain (I mostly ride a motorcycle).
The VIN indicates it was built with a 170, but the block has 5 freeze plugs on it, indicating (I think?) that it's one of the later 200/250 type engines. I've done some googling but haven't been able to figure out how to tell them apart without the (missing) ID tag. Any guidance would be great! I redid some fuel lines and rebuilt the brakes and took it for a drive yesterday- it's pretty anemic, but with a little love I think it will be a good vehicle for me.
I haven't really gotten into the tranny yet, but from driving it I can tell you it's got no synchros in first, only 2 and 3. Shifting isn't smooth, but it's not terrible. The clutch is about toast, but that should be pretty simple. Anyone know roughly what model the tranny might be, and if there are rebuild kits for these?
Thanks guys!
PS: Here's a picture of the old girl:
From this page: Classic Inlines - Ford Small Inline Six Specs
it should be a 68-69 200ci, if I'm reading it correctly. That would make sense with the 5 freeze plugs as wikipedia says they switched to that style in '65.
Now I know what kind of beast I'm looking for. Thanks guys!
