I went to pickup a 76 sc f100 last week as a body donor for my project. I was told it only had some surface rust. Here is what I found without even trying, so I left it there. https://picasaweb.google.com/007jbb/...eat=directlink The trucks interior was in great shape (only 38,000 miles) as was the body except for a few places of rust. It has always been in the south but the old lady that owns it let someone borrow it to go to the coast fishing a few times. Even the metal above the wheel wells of the bed is solid but where it has rust... it is real bad. In the attached photos, anywhere you see bright light or dark, it is a hole. My buddy swears it is repairable and not that major. I'm a pretty good welder and have some specialty tools such as a plasma cutter but i'm NO body work man. Never really tried. What do yall think? The sills and long spot of rust behind the passenger door scare me the most (pics numbered 1 and 2). Thanks
I would jump on it, could be a weekend project if you jumped on it or 2 taking your time. Body work isnt hard it just takes some time to get things right. Youtube has a lot of great how to videos from different colleges dealing with bodywork and paint.
I would say it depends on how much time a person is willing to spend eating grinding dust and smelling welding fumes. I think you did well in walking away, there are better donor trucks out there, just have to keep beating the bushes/barns.
Thanks for yalls advice. I keep flip flopping. I don't mind the work but I am not sure I can get it done like it needs to be... but I like the color and interior and options...but they won't take less then $1200... but it is a Explorer with the Mexicali Red paint (Explorer models only). This makes it a little more valuable to me. I guess living & growing up in the south, rust scares me. I am still looking and have been for several months. I have a wonderful phone app that monitors 24 different Craigslists and notifies me when something is added.
BTW, the man helping sell it swears it has a 400 ?wide block? in it but its a 76 model and has those real round looking valve covers. He's wrong don't you think? The only reason I ask is I could use the motor in my 74 F350 (360ci)since it is on its last leg.
myself i wouldnt touch it for 1200 but to each his own! it is
possible that it has a 400 in it 76 was the last year for the fe maybe its amid year 76 the fe had rounded valve covers and m had more squared
I think it is kinda funny. just depends on where you live.
if you are in the south, it is a rusted out piece of crap. if you are in the rust belt, its in pretty good shape for the age.
rust belter here ... it's in better shape than mine.
Yeah the guy said "I've gotta ask. I've been trying to sell this for months and everybody says its to rusty. Up north where I came from this is a gem for the age." I told him he's in Georgia now probably didn't help me get the price down but I wasn't trying to be a smart a$$. Just not use to that much rust.
Looks better than mine. I am not a welder just began and in one week I fixed three rot holes in a fender, the bottom corners of the driver door inside and out. Not hard esp if you know how to weld, took me longer since I was blowing holes in mine. Depends on what you want I guess but body work is easy to learn but paint will tell the true tale
