That is a little hard to tell in the pic, but I personally wouldn't worry too much about it. It looks ugly and it would always be in the back of your mind, but I don't see why it wouldn't be serviceable. I am at a loss why it cracked, but I would guess maybe a previous oil pump seizure in the past or maybe the engine was ran without the distributor hold down tight and it bound up, anythng is possible in a 40 year old truck.
One would think the dizzys shear pin would snap before causing carnage like that, it looks to me like a PO was whacking on a frozen dizzy to free it up and caused that damage in the process.
This engine is actually in my 71 cougar. D0VE-A block D0VE-.C heads. Was my step grandfathers he pasted from cancer about 2 years ago engine was balanced blueprinted, forged pistons, scj intake and carb. Had less that 1000 mi on it my grandma figures. It sat for about 4 yrs so when I got it I soaked cylinders, turned it over by hand rebuilt carb and it ran good pulled engine to cleanup and paint underhood and engine. Found roller tip rockers were pretty rust pitted and surface rusted I desided to disassmble alittle further and saw this I don't know if this has been seen before or no. This this was dynoed after built at 550 hp according to the family. Don't want to trash the hole thing.
It is actually cracked threw completely in the top of pick deformed area and 3/4 of the way threw near the bottom. Looks like the piece is about ready to fall out.
A good machinist could probably bore it and put a sleeve in it, or you could get another block. Myself I wouldn't leave it that way because Murphy's law seems to run everything I do..
UMMM? The last time I saw that happen was to a 390 because some untrained person used a slide hammer to free a "stuck" cam. The cam was being held in by the dizzy of course it was not going to move!
