hi, question for everyone... my first 460 had a distributor pin shearing problem- every time id replace the distributor, and every time the pin would shear off again... after the 6th one the car got impounded. i get another 460 and no issues other than the carb but i havent driven it much... my third 460 has the distributor shearing problem again... anyone else have this problem? what was the fix? im pretty much down to getting a new distributor every 50-200 miles- thats about how long the pin lasts. im considering buying a dui distributor or duraspark from performance distributors here, but i want to know if there could be another bigger problem that a "good" distributor wouldnt cure. thanks in advance
Dang, your engines sure are pin-hungry!
What oil are you running, and what oil pumps are used?
With a 30 weight oil or 10W30 and a stock oil pump, your pins should never be an issue... Give us as much info as you can.
I would check the installed height of the gear. If the gear is binding against the block it will break the pin. Here are the specs for a MSD bronze gear. They should be the same for a stock one.
hey thanks guys scooter and green- those were the things i was looking for was hoping it wasnt anything to do with the block. i run 10w40 year-round and im pretty sure the pump is stock, but you never know what the p.o. might have done to it. i was told the motor was rebuilt, but the carb is still factory original so im doubting it. doesnt matter one way or the other- it seemed to run fine before the distributor went. im thinking about throwing an edelbrock carb on it because the throttle plate on the factory carb is shot. ill try the hardened pin and check the installed height after pin replacement, and update you all on how it worked out.
i have had alot of 460's over the years and i had this to happen to me what it was on mine. pices of the old hard valve stem seals had got into the oil pump pickup and locked up the oil pump. snaping the distributor pin so you might want to check that hope this helps you.

i hope thats not it... its too cold to mess with dropping the pan. if replacing the distributor doesnt fix it dropping the pan will have to wait until spring.
