Push down on the shifter and that stamped sheet metal collar, then rotate the collar about 90* counterclockwise, it'll pop right off.

Slip a 1" or 1 1/4 box end wrench over the shift tower. Use the wrench as leverage to push down on the top of the collar lock and turn cc wise. It is a stout spring so it will take some muscle to push down and turn at the same time. You do not have to push or pull on the shifter to get the lock collar loose. I have read where some people are telling others to push down on the shifter too no need for that. One thing I recomend after you get the shift tower out get a good file and clean up berrs and ridges that may exsist from years of use. It will help get the lock collar reinstalled too. Should come out pretty easy once you get the right proceedure down. Good luck.

And make sure it is in neutral before removing. This will assist in getting it back in with shift forks correct.

There are TWO different 4 speeds used in these trucks, so there are TWO different methods for removing the shift lever retainer cap.

New Process 435 4 speed: The shift lever retainer cap (B8T-7220-D) has two notches, below the cap is a cone shaped retainer and coil spring.

The cap is retained in place by two (visible) pins that protrude from the shift tower.

To remove this cap, it must be pressed down and held down while turning it to remove it.

Some peeps are unaware, use pliers to remove it...which tears out one or both of the notches. Not pleasant!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Warner T-18 4 Speed: The shift lever retainer cap (8MTH-7220) is threaded, so it screws off/on.

Once the cap is removed, there are two roll pins (1/4" O.D. x 5/8" long)...that retain the shift lever in place.

Use the wrench and reverse the process of removal.
