I recently rebult and installed an 87-91 style BW1356 t-case into my 93. I transfered the flange over to the "new" case and the dust shield on it is rubbing into the output seal on the tailshaft/bearing retainer. At first I used the the tailshaft from the 87 t-case, and now i've switched to the one from my old case with the same results. What in the world is going on?
Note: I left out the speedo sensor and gear since I don't need it on my 93; could this have anything to do with it?
OK, here's the deal with early (87-91) vs late model (92-96+) BW1356 transfercases.
1. Early models came with fixed yoke rear output on rear. The fixed yoke on the front and rear output are interchangable. You can't put the fixed yoke off an early model onto a late model as the mainshaft from the late model case is .020" larger in diameter (unless you swap mainshafts).
2. You can't put a flange output onto an early case without swapping the mainshaft. It will phisicaly go on there and make a tight connection, but the splined section at the rear of of the early model mainshaft is shorter. What this does is cause the flange to rub into the oil seal on the extension housing and will destroy the tailshaft adaptor very quickly.
3. The actuator arm at the t-case for late model cases points straight up in 2wd. The early model case arm points at about 10 o' clock in 2wd. The 92-96 push down-style linkage will not work unless the arm at the case is at 12 o' clock in 2wd.
