The irony is that they have emissions testing of diesels up to 10k sticker weight (my DRW is exempt from testing just don't think that it's exempt from the fines though, which is what a lot of people do think, exempt from testing means exempt from fines) around here in the Nashville area.
Well I took a look around and the only references I have found is that local authorities can implement fines to support federal efforts.

Air - Texas Commission on Environmental Quality - www.tceq.texas.gov

And reading through I have seen that there is a effort to reduce idling. I do see where fleet vehicles have had fines. I guess it would depend on where your at at what local authorities have decided to implement.

I was not aware of this. It appears that its a grass root effort started with the clean air act a few yrs ago. Then once again the ploy is to allow the local government to fine individuals to increase local jurisdictions revenue.

Like I say have not heard of it and have a had a hard time finding information where the average commuters are fined. I did some some mention of performance vehicles as being targeted. Intresting thanks for posting about that.

I think in part why you have previously had a hard time finding information about the average joe blow being fined is because now the majority of people are more concerned about being "green". Rightfully or not, the majority of people (atleast 51%) are thinking more along those lines, even though legally it's been this way for a long time, just more people are in favor of it now. Also, I think that increasing revenue also plays an important part as well. There are regulations here that previously were overlooked, but are now being enforced.

With regard to sports cars or souped up vehicles, those are just the easier ones to spot and ones that more then likely would be in violation of something. Statistically speaking the odds are greater with a souped up vehicle compared to something that looks like a ma and pa kettle vehicle. About the only time you'll get those is on inspection either for emissions itself or for re-sale. Re-sale inspections will depend on how thorough of an inspection they give and/or how much of a "rip" they give about that inspection.

What doesn't help our case as diesel truck owners are the little crappy pimply faced teenagers that want to run a smoke tune. That is more damning to us then anything else.

Yep.

MBRP from the turbo back. No more then 4"s unless you plan on modding your turbo and/or injectors to something more powerful. Anything bigger then 4"s and you will more then likely less low end "grunt". Now you can get around that with more powerful over fueling tunes, but that brings about it's own issues as well.

With regard to the Cat. You also run into legal issues here as well, but let us set that aside for a second. The Cats on our vehicles today are not the HP/TQ robbing Cats that my parents had to deal with. About the only thing(s) that you might see with taking the Cat out or hallowing out the Cat is more sound and maybe (I stress maybe) and EGT reduction, more then likely negligible at that.

I made an assumption that it was some type of emission check...
some type of on the fly emission check,
but it's been on the north bound side of 360 as you turn east onto 183 near DFW airport multiple times I've been through there...

I've seen the same pickup,
some type of 'sniffer' if you will
and cables and a bright spot light even though it's light in the morning during my rush hour...

i usually left off the fuel and coast through, just in case
