i have as my username says an 86 f250 xlt 4x4 i pulled the transmission and transfer case from my parts truck and they are both now installed on my dd and the only problem i am having right now is speedo not working properly i checked the speedo cable gears they match and i even switched the speedo cables out and still having troubles so im guessing its something inside the transfer case.... i was wondering if anyone knew what else could cause speedo problems inside the transfer case?... i have the transfer case that was in my truck but on it says its from an 89 f250 and the gear selector valve is above the pivot instead of below it... i was wondering if i the internals were the same if i needed parts for the one thats in the truck right now... and just for som fyi i only switched the t-case because the atf had so much water in it that after i pulled it it has the consistancy of strawberry yogurt and it was always a b*&^h to select 2 or 4 wheel
and so you guys know the speedo is way off and it jumps around ALOT!

The speedo drive gear inside the transfer case is plastic. Some times it get worn, and the cable gear can't make constant contact with the worn gear, thus the jumping, not working speedo. IIRC there are different color gears in the transfer case for different ratios. If the drive gear is worn, you should be able to see it trough the hole where the cable mounts into the case. The drive gear should be flat across the whole gear. A bad gear will be concaved where the driven gear runs.
thanks for the info i will check it out tomorrow while changing the master cylinder... for cleaning out and changing the fluid should i pull the t-case apart?...or can i just empty it and dump something like seafoam in it? maybe some purple power... shake the crap out of it then let it sit for a day and then fill it with 80-90??
I usually just pull the plug and let it drain. You should have an aluminum bodied transfer, probably a 1354, case that takes auto tranny fluid, not 80-90.
my buddy has always used 80-90 in his truck transfer case... and if i am correct thats what is in the t-case that is out of my parts truck.... also where can i get the main seal for the t-case?
