Great site! Little mule's speedo is toast. I pulled the assembly out of the transfer case and hooked it up to a drill. Cable and dash are good. I bought a new gear for the transfer case end and it tried to work for about 10 miles. I am afraid that it is the gear inside the transfer case. Is there any way to change that gear without pulling the transfer case? If not is there any after market electric to replace it with?
Thanks for all the help!

I'd love to hear the answer to this. My xfer case gear is worn also. My speedo died about a year ago, and I tried changing the gear on the cable. The speedo worked for about 1 mile, then quit. When I had the case out to replace the tranny, I could see the gear inside the xfer case was toast. So, if anyone has changed this, I would love to know how.
Thanks.
BTW, I have a BW 1345 xfer case.

Which transfer case ? This is the procedure for the BW 1356 . Remove the driveshaft ,remove the speedometer cable , remove the output shaft extension housing on the transfer case , you will see the drive gear , remove its clip & push the gear forward . Be careful there will be a small steel ball there , it holds the gear in place . Slide the gear off the output shaft & install the new one . Installation is the opposite . Youll need some black RTV to seal the output shaft extension . If the cable gear is damaged you might want to get another one too .

It has been a while since I did this to my '82 F-250's transfer case so here goes. First drain transfer case then disconnect front u-joint of the rear drivehaft from the transfer case's rear output yoke. Now using the appropriate socket( 1 1/4" I believe) and an impact wrench remove nut that attatches rear yoke to transfer case, pull yoke off and remove old seal if a new one is to be replaced. Using needle nosed piers grab hold of speedo gear/sleeve assembly and remove. Replace gear assembly with new one (you may want to install new speedo gear that goes onto cable just to be safe), install new seal (if needed), rear yoke and torque the output nut accordingly (100-130 ft. lbs.). Re-install driveshaft and refill transfer case. I hope this helps in any way.

bb79ranch,
Is there a small ball that holds the internal speedo gear from turning?
I want ot find out before I pull the gear. Because, if there is a ball there, I don't want to lose it in the case.
Thanks, I was wondering if I could replace the gear w/o having to crack the case open.

Hey Roger,
There is NO ball holding the speedo gear in place like the later model BW 1356, the 1345 uses a steel sleeve that has the speedo gear pressed onto it. What holds the sleeve/speedo gear in place on the output shaft is the pressure of the rear output yoke of the transfer case once torqued to specification.

Thanks Todd,
I wish I had known that when I was swapping the tranny. My truck spent a month in my garage while I replaced the M5OD. Let me tell you, my wife was not happy about that. I better wait a little while before I go and tear into it again.

Picked up the new speedo gear from the dealer yesterday. I was surprised that they had it in stock. The gear in question is the internal gear for a BW1345 transfer case. The part number is E7TZ-17285-B. It is a yellow gear, with 8 teeth per inch. The gear is only 3/4 of an inch wide, but it works out to 8 teeth per inch.
I will install this new gear sometime this week and reply to this thread with the out come.
BTW, this is for a 1989 F250.
