This is druving me nuts, when it drops to 20 or below my FE is a pain
to start. When then engine is warm it takes just a quick bump and its running. When it's cold it hates any choke, (manuel choke ) and don't even think about pumping the pedal. Timing is at 11 degrees( 5 added for altitude of 6500 ft) dwell is in spec, points, condenser, plugs and wires less than a year old. Any suggestions, tips , tricks ??
Never had a problem starting mine but its only in the low-mid 30's here right now but still starts with a few pumps and a quick turn of the key. Don't even need to use the choke.
Trying to get the 65 with 390 started on a cold winter morning was a major pain in the backside and as garbz mentioned installed Duraspark ll electronic ign. and it solved the problem. Understand Pertronix is an alternative, perhaps easier installation, both cost bout same. As bertha 66 mentioned you can try placing a drop light in the engine compartment, or they have 'golden rods' made for that purpose but they can get expensive so the light would probly be cheaper.
To clarify I have block heaters in all my trucks, they all run Edelbrock 1406 600CFM carbs. The only one that is finicky is my 64. I like the idea of the Pertronix from what I've read, I do wonder how critical it is to use their coil as well, does anybody have a comment on just using the Pertronix points replacement with and /or without their coil?
The battery is rated at 1100 amps at 32 and 800 amps at 0 and is brand new as of Tuesday. This is the only slick out 9 that I've owned that ever has given me this kind of issue, my first 66 I had in Trverse City Mi. I never plugged in and started really well at
-20 degrees, that 's why I'm stumped. Thanks for the suggestions and tips!!
