Looking for some help with a windshield and back window. I went to classic haulers yesterday to pick these up and they are out of stock. I was told they will be out till late spring. I can get these cut locally all I need is a pattern. If someone has a windshield and back glass out for a ’48 to ’50 and can send me a tracing of them I would be good to go. I will cover expenses to help make this happen.
Sorry for Hi-jacking your thread. But this is a good idea... I would like to get a copy of the windshield, rear window & door glass (wing window & window). I would hate for this info to be lost. and the only glass that I don't need to change is the rear window. So I don't want to have these templete lost. I want to check with one of my daughter's friends family member owns a glass company amd may need the patterns to have him cut.
A good glass company should be able to make a window by going by the window frame. If you make a full sized tracing of the window opening using a piece of cardboard they should be able to deduct the amount around the edge they need for the window rubber. Take the tracing and window rubber with you when you go to the glass company.
Um....maybe Tinman can weigh in on the dimensions....I think the glass is somewhere around 1/8" to 1/4" bigger than the frame.
I'm pretty sure that the glass is bigger than the opening and actually sits on the outside of the frame (well...outside the frame on the windshield and inside for the rear window). The grooves in the rubber seal are offset to accommodate this.
That's why you have to install the windshield from the outside & pull the seal inward, and for the rear glass, you start with the glass inside and pull the seal outward.
Also...it wouldn't hurt to call Larry at Blue Oval Truck Parts...He did supply my rear window, but he lists windshields in the catalog.
If you can get a good source on the actual oversize, a local glass shop will save you the shipping costs.

Hello, My local glass place just gave me a quote of $175 for the windshield cut to match my current one (which has a bullet hole in it). Does this seem good or should I keep looking? If I do bring it in, I will have them make a paper template that I could share...like a chain letter. I would likely have them do all of the glass at the same time. Therefore, it could be a chain letter with a full set of templates. Thanks, Steve
I had a windshield made for my truck about 15 years ago for $75, I installed it. So I would say $175 15 years later isn't a bad price. Also consider there are less and less people able and willing to do this type of work. I had a hard time 15 years ago finding an auto glass company who would do it. I ended up going to a glass company that did shower glass doors.
I agree. I went to auto glass places and they would not touch the job. The quote I got was from a company that does general household glass. Thanks for the feedback! Steve
In this little burg (Denver) where I hail I can tell you do not go to auto places, they are only interested in the quick nickle job of mass production. Go to a store front, commercial/industrial glass place (the places that do big pane windows for store entry display areas), they are happy to do such a small project and are affordable - they consider it pittifully small And yes, they handle auto type safety glass.
When I ordered my rear glass, it came in a double packed, and was supported in the middle of the box, so the whole package was relatively bullet proof.
Also, as a side note, a friend of mine is a safelite glass dealer. He said that he (or any other safelite guy) can get any glass that we want. The ordering process may take a little longer than glass for something modern, but they list it in their catalogs & they can get it.
When I did my glass last year, no one in town was interested in the job. I had to practically beg to get vent windows done. They were late and charged more than agreed. LMC had the best deal on front and rear glass, and the shipping was reasonable. It was packed well and fit perfectly.
I have all the glass but the front. My father-in-law owns a glass company and made all my glass. His pattern for the front was faded as it comes to the top on the sides and the top line is gone. Cant get a good trace from it. I can also make some patterns for any one that needs them, for everything else.
