Ok so today I want to service my E4OD trans and I just wanted to make sure (because it is my first time) that I wont run in to the unexpected. First I drop the pan by removing all the bolts on the long sides of the pan, then remove all but two bolts on the short ends... Once that is off I want to drain the torque converter right? What have you guys been using for turning the flywheel? Once that has been drained I then remove old filter and install new one. The I clean the surfaces for remounting the pan with a new gasket. Tighten her up, and spry down with brake clean so is easier to check for leaks. Sound right?
I cannot find a single flywheel turning tool at any of the shops around here. Does anyone have any tricks for spinning the flywheel? If not I can get one tomorrow.
Changing ATF Fluid in a E4OD and 4R100 transmission .: Articles Here is a link to a good method.
If you do decide you want to drain the converter then you could rig a remote starter wire (from the fender mounted relay) or get a helper to jag it over on the starter (having disconnected the FSS wire).

I disconnected the starter wire from the relay and hooked up two wires to the relay and ran them down under the truck. Layer under the truck and watched the converter while I touched the wires together. Worked great. Make sure your key is off or, probably a good idea to unplug wires to FSS, just to make sure it don't start.
You can also put a socket on the crank bolt up front and use that to turn the engine and thus the flywheel. Little more manual work, but it will work and allow you to turn it exactly where you want.
I have always been alone and just used a large flathead screwdriver or pry bar to turn the flywheel. Just brace it against the edge of the bell housing and catch the teeth with the flat end of you tool. That way your under it to see where everything is and you don't add any stress to the starter.
Just me tho
