I am going to attempt to sevice the trans on my 92 F-250 5.8, E4OD but this is my first ever auto trans so I really dont know what is the proper way to do this job. I have read that Mobile synthetic ATF is good fluid and that I should change the filter and drain the Trans and Torque converter. My question is how do I drain the Torque converter and also how do I refill the Torque converter? Is there anything else I should do to this trans as of now there are no problems with the trans it works fine but the previous owner more than likely never had it serviced its current milage is 157,000 miles........ Thanks for any help Jack
I didn't bother with the flush. I just drained the Pan and Torque converter , added a filter and refilled.
The torque converter should have a drain bolt . Remove the rubber access cover and using a breaker bar, turn crankshaft pulley until the drain bolt is visible ( use a mirror and flashlight combo to observe the TC thru that access hole).
Prepare to bathe in fluid when you remove the pan . Install a drain bolt in the pan and the next change will be a no mess affair.
Note on refilling : After adding 7-8 quarts , start the engine and let it run for 10-20 secs. Then add the rest of the fluid. This will distribute the fluid into the torque converter. If you don't do this step the pan will be overfilled and on initial startup the fluid will be forced out through the pan gasket making a mess.
Very important : use mercon rated fluid. DO NOT USE MERCON V.
