another electric lift pump thread

on my 87 IDI, i want to add an electric lift pump to use only as a starting aid. i've already searched and read many threads on the subject, so i know what i'm looking at for the pump itself, but had a wiring idea i hadn't seen here before
my plan is to have it installed in line with the mechanical pump (which is new), probably right after the water separator.
the thought i had was to wire it up with a relay controlled by the purple wire on the GP relay. this gives it 10 seconds to pump up before i hit the starter, then turns off and lets the mechanical do all the work once its running.
it seems to me this would be the best of both worlds: the simplicity and ultimate reliability of the mechanical pump, but the starting benefit when i have air intrusion problems.
the other thought i had (which i'm not as sure of) would be to wire it without an additional relay to the load side of the GP relay. the concern i have with this is the voltage drop caused by the GPs on those small wires, might have the pump running on 8 volts and burn itself out real quick
so i'm leaning toward wiring with a new relay

what do you guys think of the whole idea as opposed to a toggle switch or pushbutton for my intended use?

if you use a pump that shuts off when a set pressure is reached, it will only work until the mechanical pump is running. then it will shut off.

Or maybe an oil pressure switch? The the e-pump would run until you had 5-7 psi oil pressure...

Just an idea....

@TJC, since i was thinking of installing the pump back on the frame rail (before the mechanical pump), i don't see how it would ever have pressure to shut off.

@otahyoni, i've heard of others using an oil pressure switch for the purpose, which makes me wonder, is there any real benefit to that system, or are they using it because they already have an idiot light sensor in place and its just convenient? i have a gage not an idiot light, so that would be an extra sensor (no big deal, they're cheap). is there any benefit to the OP switch over the GP control system, considering that either system would be triggering a relay and not carrying much power

When an oil pressure switch is used , it is normally to kill the pump if you lose oil pressure, I have never seen one rigged to kill it when it starts.

ok. if you are going to mount it back on the frame before the mechanical pump. i would disconnect the mechanical pump and just use the electric. this way if the electric pump dies, you still have the mechanical pump to get you home.

ahh ok.if i must.

well the solution here is actually very simple.
ditch the stock lift pump, block it off,and install a e-pump from Doug (genlightning.) it's the pump thermo kings used on their refers!! we all know how important it is to keep a truck full of thousands and thousands dollars worth of food cold.
to state it simply, the pump is very dependable.
if you don't think that pump is more reliable than a stock mechanical lift pump on idi engine, then i can't help ya.
the price is very good, you'll never buy a second one (as long as you don't run wmo) it's made to pull,so it's all easy service in the engine bay.do it once and forget it.no more need to worry about a stock fuel pump diaphragm rupturing and filling your crank case full of fuel.no more worry about fuel drained back to the tank.problems solved.
