So if I wanted to grab some new or "new to me" heads for my 65 that have hardened seats what should i look for? just 390 heads? or is there going to be an advantage or disadvantage to different style heads?
ya i know thats an option but id rather just find a set with hardend seat and put them on my motor. Also slightly toying with the idea of just buying some new heads. The truck is going to just be a daily driver nothing special for a long time so im not to worried about putting something fancy on there just some that are going to make it run consistant and not clak lol
If your heads are original, they have bigger ports than all the heads I know of with factory hardened valve seats. I think the ones with factory hard seats were tempered or something of the sort. If you take yours to a machine shop, they will put in hardened inserts. In my opinion, these are far superior.
Thanks for the insight redneck... I talked to my buddy that works for the best machinist around and I think im convinved just to pull my heads and have them put in hardened seats and clean them up.
Stick with your stock heads, and just have the seats redone... aftermarket aluminum heads will change what cam and springs you will need. and better breathing heads while they will increase performance, will lower Vacuum pressure.. if you have an automatic trans, that will alter the shift points.... You could be opening up a can of worms.... if this is an everyday driver, just have the heads rebuilt with the new seats, a valve job and mill the heads while you are at it... A good machine shop should do the whole deal for about $3oo for both heads, and usually they will warranty their work for a year...
So the main reason i was intrested in getting new head is because it had a bad clack and i was figuring that was due to not having hardened seats and the valves being out of adjustment. Well today i finally had time to pull the valve covers and see what might be going on. I found this. A nicely bet push rod. So i checked everything out and the lifted is still in place and the valve is not collapsed so im going to throw a new $3 push rod in it and see what happens.
