98 F150 heating problem - calling all PROFESSIONALS
Alright I have a 98 f150 and im having heat problems. First off I like to start by saying that i have a blowen head gasket ( which may be the problem). When the truck is running (idling or driving) i will have no heat then there will be heat or the other way around and it will go back and forth ( heat then no heat, heat then no heat). Last year I put Bars Copper in the antifreeze to stop or slow the leak (which seem to help) and by the way i flushed the whole syetm b4 I put the bars in. (just last week) I check the antifreeze and it was down about 3/4 of a gallon, so i filled it back up and still having the problem. I dont have no sweet smell in the cab of the truck, so i would assume that the heater core is not leaking. So now what do you think it is, the head gasket or the thermostat? ( the thermostat seems to me to be working).
if you are 1/2 gallon low, you will get air pockets in the heater core and it will blow hot- then cold.. standard symptoms of low coolant level. How fast did the coolant level drop ? Several month to use the antifreeze or a few days ? If its a cup a month, just add that and keep it topped off.....YOu might have to park nose up hill and get the radiator high.. let truck run and burp the air out when thermostat opens.. I have also installed a flushing TEE in the heater hose way up on top of the motor VEE and loosened the cap to let air out as i fill the radiator.
Over several months I lost that amount of antifreeze. yesterday I did a little bit of driving around and for the most part i had nice warm heat. it only acted up the first 5 mins of driving. As far as that tee that your talking about, I do have one on my truck too. One thing I dont know why ford took away the radiator cap, we just have the reservoir tank cap.
