Hello I am new to this site. I recently bought a 1996 F-150 with a 5.8 liter in it. I replaced the thermostat and when i turn my heater on there is plenty of air but it is not hot. This is even after a 10-15 minuter ride going about 50-60mph. Please Help.
i checked the fluid level after a ride and the level was at the same level before i started my truck up. After I returned from my ride i checked the tube going into the top of the radiator and it seems not to be hot at all. It is still just luke warm. Like i said i just replaced the thermostat, is there a chance i put it in wrong?? I inserted it in with the spring to the engine side. I am not mechanic as you can tell. I just bought this truck and will need heat very soon where i live. Thanks for your help and time.
You should burn yourself on the upper radiator hose when the motor is up to temp. The coolant coming through there is typically in the 200 degree range, and the hose isn't much cooler.
The two smaller hoses that go into the upper firewall are for the heater core - that's where your heat comes from. If those hoses aren't hot, then you won't have heat.
It is possible that you put the stat in wrong, although I don't know which way it's supposed to go offhand.
Double check the coolant level. When the engine is cold, it should be all the way to the top of the radiator. If not, top it off with a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water.
In addition to the thermostat, get a new radiator cap. It could be causing your engine to underheat, and they're only a couple bucks.
Thermostats go pointy end to the hose. The copper looking pellet goes in the motor this senses the heat and causes the thermostat to open. Put it in backwards and the hose will be cool and the motor will overheat. Been there done that.
