Just hit 40,000 miles on my F-150....looking to change tires....my question is will it be ok to put tires sized 285/65R18 when its recommended to use 275/65R18. What if anything will it affect?
Couple of questions:
Is your truck 2wd or 4wd?
Are you stock height, or leveled? If stock, are you planning on a level?
You should be able to cram a 285/65/18 on a stock 4wd F150. It might, barely, rub the trailing edge of the front bumper, but a little trimming would fix that. Your speedo is going to register slightly lower than with the smaller tire size, thus your odometer, and trans are affected too. It's a very minor change that you probably won't even realize.
Tires that I'm considering.... #1 Falken Wild Peak....these are the only A/T's I'm looking at the rest are M/T's. #2 Kelly Fierce Atitude M/T
#3 Nitto Trail Grappler M/T
....So far I really like those 3....
275/65R18....recommended for my truck....but some only come in these two sizes....
285/65R18....?
275/70R18....?
The largest you'll want to go on a stock 4wd truck is roughly 33.5", anything taller and you'll need a leveling kit.
Your stock 18" wheels are 8.5" wide. anything past a 295 width is likely to rub and wear oddly.
Bottom line...even though the stock tire on my '05 SCREW is 255/70/17, can a put safely (based on the tire size calc) put on a 275/70/17 and without putting on a leveling kit?
