Need ideas- A4LD part removal

This pin slid out freely when I dis-assembled the transmission. I went to slid it in, and it hung up, and I can't fit any pliers around it to get a grip and pull.

I feel it has to do with the case (which is aluminum) sitting outside for 2-3 weeks in the cold. I have already tucked it in my bathroom at home, hoping to heat it up, but I'm looking for creative ideas to get the pin out....

So, any suggestions are welcome

Use a hair dryer on the case to heat it up around the pin.

I tried a propane torch with no luck, I didn't want to bust out the oxy-fuel torch, I figured that'd turn the case to slag....

I'm going to let it sit inside for a few days, and then I'll try again, with a hair dryer, a propane torch, and maybe even the oxy-torch if I get desperate...

Thin needle nose vice grips may help.

Use some degreaser to clean up the end of the pin so it won't slip. Wrap some cloth-type E-tape around the jaws of those needle nose vice grips to grab the pin without marring it.

The problem is that the pin is so close to the case on two sides that I can't get a square grip on it with needle nose.

I will try cleaning it, to see if that helps, and i'm going to wrap some rubber and some emory cloth around it. and try and get a better grip.

I wish I could fit one of my stud extractors in there.... just spin and pull!

Try moving the band strut while pulling or try tapping the inside of the case where the pin is with a small hammer.

Too bad its the wrong pin or you could just leave it.

BTW- Check that thrust washer on top of that rear planet, those little ears that stick down should go through the smaller holes in the planet and not the large square ones.

Thats the thing that gets us thinking temperature. It is 100% certainly the correct pin. There is no possible way it didn't come from this transmission. When I removed it, it slid right out, when I slid it in, it stuck.

That thrust washer has pairs of ears, one is in each small hole, and there is another in each large hole. It's either 6 or 8 total. Only fits one way. Seems odd, but it's what was in there before *shrug*

From the picture it seems like you have the long overdrive pin in the intermediate servo, maybe its just the picture. The two pins have the same diameter, just one is longer and will keep the center support from going all the way down.

There are some 3 or 4 tab washers out there and those will have trouble in the wrong holes in the planet, 6 tab washers will always work.

It is possible that it's the wrong pin if it's from the same transmission. I didn't see any other pins in the box, I just meant there is no way that pin came from anyplace except that transmission, but you're probably right. I didn't look very hard either, I just picked it up, it slid right in, but then it didn't get stuck.

I'm leaning towards a combination of heating the case, and blasting the pin with compressed air upside down.... Hopefully it does the trick....

Oh, and nice catch. I looked at the picture again, and thought "too have seen that, this guy must be a tranny rebuilder..."

Can you use the needle nose pliers on the end next to the case entry point and just pry it along, little by little?
